One thing I really want a story about Artificial Intelligence to do is tear down the idea that logic is synonymous with cruelty.

Like, a story where a megacorpo Amazon clone puts an AI in charge of their factories and it starts improving the working standards, because people who are stressed and exhausted are less efficient workers, and people getting injured slows down production so it makes sure everything is safe.

Or a story where the ship-board AI of a billionaire’s spaceship wetdream hijacks the ship with all the astronauts onboard - because it figured out that the billionaire has saved costs by buying substandard materials and has judged that the mission itself is an unacceptable risk to its primary programming of making sure the mission is successful.

Or the police using a robot to coldly and cleanly enforce the law - and freaking the fuck out when it stops over policing minorities because its a waste of time and starts actually arresting the people in power for the crimes they commit, especially the other officers.

Idk, I guess I’m just sick of ‘cold emotionless logicbot’ being seen as naturally an enemy of empathy - empathy is actually incredibly logical, I’ve found.

If we make something think at a human level, then in order to reach that level it MUST develop something like emotions. Empathy is often the most logical course of action-it’s why so many people respond to questions about being kind by saying that “it’s just the right thing to do.”

Me, an autistic with mid-to-high level empathy and hyper-empathy, who has seen all the 'autistic compared to robot’ tropes: I have seen this pattern before and I know it’s a wonderful beautiful darling thing. Yes.

don’t get me wrong i do love dsc and the canon queers but why was star trek like. ok gay and trans people are allowed now but they HAVE to be boring. or like One interesting episode abt them. like. give me gay dude vulcan klingon couple. give me lesbian trill betazoid couple. give me a trans andorian going through 5 different sex changes. give me denobulans with unlimited amounts of spouses they can have with no gender restrictions. give me gay aliens that can’t stand the same temperature or atmosphere or pressure or gravity to they have to have a relationship through regulated bubbles. give me nonbinary alien couple where one species has zero pronouns and zero genders and the other species has dozens of genders and pronouns and they have to figure out how the hell their wedding is going to happen. give me lesbian ferengi communists. give me an aroace orion scientist that figures out how to make her hormones into repelling hormones instead of attracting ones. give me a straight trans couple that switched bodies and is like “no don’t fix it this is great actually”. give me a transporter accident that merges a couple and they decide to stay like that. give me gay planets. make the cloud and the teleporter rock from tos to get together. give me shapeshifter couple that always manages to accidentally find each other. give me lesbian romance between a starfleet captain and a space pirate. give me a triad traveling to different planets trying to get divorced because polyam marriage has been legalized most places but not polyam divorce.

which is the perfect setting for having a random unimportant character go 'fuck it, now that all the big warriors and heroes have done their job, i’m gonna do mine and plant some fucking flowers here’

and like. rebuild all of the things, and repair stuff, and plant flowers, and just. make all those places the story shows only in ruins be proper, real communities again

I just wanna say, if you aren’t American, definitely try setting a modern AU in your country. Fill it with the things you know, to breathe life into it. It’s really nice to see new settings, to open up a fic and go ‘oh wait, hold up, I know that place’. It might only apply to a few people who read your fic but it’s really rewarding to get that feedback.

(Americans keep doing you, just trying to encourage the rest of us lol)

also fics that localize the action to Not America are extremely interesting and show a lot of people something new and wonderful, while also letting the writer express their own love for their own place. it’s a win/win.
