Are you kidding me this is the best video I’ve ever seen
those are wood ducks! they tend to lay their eggs inside tree hollows away from predators and when their ducklings hatch they sort of plop down. The parents usually only nest about as high as their young can handle which can be up to 50 feet up!
this momma had the misfortune of making her nest over concrete so it sgood that she had assistance.
@is-the-owl-vid-cute, I’m curious about your take here. Is this guy genuinely saving their lives, or would touching the babies be more help than harm in this situation?
Touching them does not do any harm. Unless the thing touching them is concrete at a high velocity. That would do harm.
It’s a wood duck (Aix sponsa). They are native to North America where I live. They are beautiful! The males are highly colored, as with most birds, but the females are lovely as well imo. My favorite fact about wood ducks is that they nest and roost in trees!! They will build nests in old woodpecker holes and so forth. The young are precocial, which means they are able to see and walk and so forth right after hatching. But of course they are up in a tree! So they have to jump down. The parents fly out and call from the ground the encourage the ducklings, and the ducklings literally just jump. They are very light and fluffy tho and generally are falling onto soft leaves on the forest floor, so they don’t get hurt. And then they walk to the pond and commence being ducks.
Here are some photos taken from the Wikipedia article (linked below):
Anyway did you know they’re called wood ducks bc they nest in trees? The babies have to jump out of the nest cavity before they can fly. They plummet to the soft cushion of the forest floor and bounce a little because they are so small and light. And then they follow their parents to water and commence being ducks.
