We need to take a moment to acknowledge these Vulcan hats.
What if “Cousin Selek” was a common joke on Vulcan? Like John Smith or Jane Doe, ‘Selek’ is a common name, so it’s not entirely inconceivable that Spock- or any Vulcan- would have a cousin Selek. Or many cousin Seleks.
There are at least three Cousin Seleks at any Vulcan party.
Sarek: I suppose you do bear some family resemblance. Who are you?
Future Spock, panicking: … Cousin Selek.
Sarek: Ah, yes! Of course! Cousin Selek!
Sarek, internally: My cousin Selek? Spock’s cousin Selek? Amanda’s cousin-? Amanda doesn’t have a cousin Selek… In fact, now that you mention it, I don’t have a cousin Selek. Do I? Did T'Parna adopt another child?
Vulcans with their cousins Seleks be like latines with Tias:
“Who is she?” “I heard someone call her Tia Marta” “huh, ok” and now you have a new aunt.
or alternatively: “mum, who is she?” “mi Tia Silvia” “ok” and like are they even related by blood?? is she married to anyone from the family? or was she just someone’s neighbour in the 80s and is still being invited for some reason? she was probably friends with grandma right? is this the Silvia that beat grandpa at truco (a cards game)? or Tio Pablo’s wife? or another Silvia entirely???
and then when they greet you they talk about how much you’ve grown and you’re like madam this is the first time I’ve heard of you in my life please don’t say that you knew me when I was a kid I don’t know how to respond
except that with Cousin Selek there’s a 6% chance he’s actually you from the future of an alternative reality so he does know you but he’s hoping you don’t ask him how or when because he can not answer that

do you ever thinking about how literally everyone takes julian bashir’s infodumping as bragging or lecturing except Garak, who infodumps back
or how Julian never has to guess if Garak is being sarcastic or encoding a double meaning, because EVERYTHING has double meaning
and how if Garak finds that he doesn’t like Julian’s tone, he immediately tells him he doesn’t, rather than silently rolling his eyes or getting quietly irritable
and how Julian and Garak show their affection and respect for each other’s cultures and ideas by. debating them
and how when either of them DOES hurt or insult the other, they draw back and ask how they insulted so they don’t do it again? Garak does it about Julian’s age, Julian does it about Cardassia
and how Odo and Julian often work very well together even though they don’t really LIKE one another because they’re both very obstinate and linear in their thoughts - but Odo and Garak meet each other regularly for breakfast later on and are friends
i just. hhhhhhhh
i have a lot of feelings about how autistic humans respond so WELL to VULCAN communication and to CARDASSIAN communication
and its because allistic humans think cardassians and vulcans are obscure
but they’re NOT obscure. vulcans state things very bluntly, and cardassians state things very floridly, but they share in common a bluntness and directness in their communication that allistic humans often take as rude even when it’s stated it ISN’T
thinking about how Iloja of Prim, the poet, was exiled on Vulcan 👀 and feeling… Feelings
Vulcan parents have to sign a waiver before their kids are allowed to learn about First Contact/see the footage
Shrek is a Vulcan name pass it on
If you have one Vulcan on your ship, there’s a 1% chance that they’ll go into pon farr during any given month over the course of seven years:
P(Vulcan A goes into pon farr ) = (1/7) * (1/12) = 1.2%
What’s the probability of pon farr in any given month over the course of 7 years if you have two Vulcans on board? Since these are assumed to be independent events, it’s easiest to calculate the chance that neither goes into pon farr and subtract from 1:
P(A OR B) = 1 - P(NOT A) * P(NOT B)
P(A OR B) = 1 - (83/84)^2 = 2.3%
Where 84 comes from 7 years x 12 months = 84 slots for pon farr.
For N Vulcans, the formula is:
P(at least one Vulcan goes into pon farr) = 1 - (83/84)^N
If you have 58 Vulcans on board, it’s a 50% chance that in any given month you’re going to be setting course for Vulcan. By 200 Vulcans you’re up to 90% chance.
The Intrepid is said to have 430 Vulcans on board–99% chance at least one of them goes into pon farr in any given month. This would be entirely impractical unless Vulcan ships are strictly segregated by year of birth and embark on missions of 6 years or less.
Edit: OR Vulcan ships consist only of married/bonded/betrothed couples that travel together. This is the most obvious solution, and I guess why they have childhood betrothals. Puts a rather different spin on Sarek being angry about Spock joining Starfleet, though. Perhaps he was quite reasonably concerned for his son’s life. And given what did go down, whew
Note: a fun corollary to this is the birthday paradox, which asks what the probability of two people in a room of N people sharing a birthday is. Because the number of pairwise comparisons grows factorially, it’s a surprisingly low number of people (~ 75 people for the odds to approach 100%).
So what’s the probability of two Vulcans sharing a pon farr month?
P(same pon farr) = 1 - 84! / ( 84^N (85 - N)! )
We only need 27 Vulcans for the odds of two of them sharing the same pon farr to hit 99%. Awkward for all involved, unless they’re together, I suppose
I cannot properly express how much joy it brings me that you did this math. This is what I’m here for.
To make things more complicated and stupider wrt “This would be entirely impractical unless Vulcan ships are strictly segregated by year of birth and embark on missions of 6 years or less”: do we know that Vulcans start at the same age? I always figured it was more like getting a period, in that there’s a range in which you kind of expect it to happen but it isn’t like you can count on getting your first period at twelve or something. I have absolutely no basis for this except for the fact that I tend to think of pon farr in terms of menstruation in general.
That would add an extra level of complication, because it would mean that either Vulcans would have to disclose their cycle OR the fleet would have to track it themselves. Neither would be especially hard except that it requires acknowledging that pon farr exists which seems to be a trial in and of itself. Tbh knowing Vulcans I’m like torn as to whether they’d have some weirdly intricate tacit system going so no one ever has to Say The Words or just, like, do nothing and hope for the best.
