Alcea rosea is in the hibiscus family Malvaceae. Commonly known as hollyhock, it is native to southwest Asia, but has become naturalized throughout temperate parts of the world. Hollyhock is a perennial shrub that can grow over 8 feet tall, and produces large showy flowers in the axils of the leaves. For centuries, hollyhock has been planted ornamentally, with hundreds of varieties available for cultivation that range in size and flower color. Aside from its ornamental use, hollyhock has a history of use medicinally as a moisturizer, and to cure inflammation.

Artemisia frigida is in the sunflower family Asteraceae. Commonly known as fringed sagewort it is widespread around the world, found throughout Europe Asia and North America. Fringed sagewort is a perennial that grows primarily in grasslands and woodlands, producing a tall raceme full of small yellow flowers. The finely dissected leaves are extremely aromatic, and contain camphor and other fragrant compounds. While the leaves are not used for cooking like true sage, fringed sagewort has a long history of medicinal use, being used to treat colds and the flu, as well as headaches and fevers.
