Tolan was Garak’s gay uncle who happened to be available to pretend to be his sister’s husband so that she would not be shamed for having a child out of wedlock. He totally cruised in the Tolak gardens.
A Stitch in Time thoughts
Part 1: about the Hebitians and sentimentality and Andy Robinson accidentally inventing the social model of disability again
The Oralian Way is a cool concept for many reasons, but one of them is that instead of the nice Jewish-coded characters secretly being evil lizard aliens, it’s evil lizard aliens that are secretly nice and Jewish-coded.
Anyway Pythas Lok is trans and that’s that on that
Pythas, Elim, and Kelas are all trans. Alon Ghemor is canonically super gay. Damar was a repressed bisexual. Gilora and Ulani are girlfriends, bi and lesbian respectively. Nal Dejar is aro and queer. Palandine was bi as hell. Natima Lang is also queer and trans. Tekeny Ghemor was pan probably.
All the Cardassians are queer as hell except Tain and Dukat. The cishets can have them.
I FORGOT MILA AND TOLAN
anyway Mila was bi and Tolan was very gay.
Edit to add: the real Iliana Ghemor was a whole ass lesbian.
I know he’s only in ASIT, so that’s most of why, but I wish we talked more about how important Tolan Garak was to Elim’s character and development. Like. Tolan taught Elim to nurture, to have patience, to love things for what they are not just what they can give, to appreciate beauty for its own sake! And to love Cardassia as a concept beyond the Central Command and the Obsidian Order. Tbh idk how Elim would have turned out if he hadn’t had Tolan’s influence in his early years. And I just think it’s a great thing that he did have this quality father figure in his life to contrast against Tain. And that it was a male character who gave Elim all of this. I think that’s important. The best parts of Elim are the fact that he deeply and desperately loves and he is deeply and desperately loyal and he got those traits from Tolan.
