350 Million years in a single picture.

Dun Briste and the surrounding cliffs were formed around 350 million years ago (during the ‘Lower Carboniferous Period’), when sea temperatures were much higher and the coastline at a greater distance away.

As a fun little addition, look about a third of the way up, where the clean horizontal lines of the outcrop are broken by a small arc, thick in the middle and pinching out towards the sides, concave upwards and with a darker/black color.

That’s a fluvial deposit, probably a small creek or river- the arc is a cross section, so the lowest point is the deepest part of the river. It’s darker because it was rich in organic matter, and after the plant matter was buried here the constituent carbon remained for millions of years- possibly as a small lignite or coal deposit. (‘Carboniferous’ period, right? It’s a common sight in this age of rock)

This is a 350,000,000 year old riverbed. Fun to imagine standing by that ancient creek, ferns and primitive moss growing thick in the shallows, insects and the odd critter enjoying themselves on the banks, and knowing that something of this moment would remain even three hundred and fifty millions years in the future, embedded in a monolith rising above the sea.

It’s so funny when my friends apologize for like not talking to me for a week or something because its like babe…….object permanence im sorry because i love you but time is different for me it does not matter if we haven’t spoken in a week or a month ill still love you lol but i literally be forgetting about people until they text me

I have a friend with chronic pain who has a bible study with me over the phone each week. She cancels a lot, or doesn’t phone at all. Always apologizes the next week.

After a year and a half, I think it finally sinking in that I Do Not Notice. Talking with her is one of the highlights of my week! Every conversation is amazing! But time is an illusion, and I am surprised 90% of the time when she DOES call. Time just … doesn’t exist? Things happen arbitrarily.

It like the Elves on Middle Earth. For me, time is flat. A single point that events come to. For the rest of the world, there’s another dimension that God didn’t bother to update me with.

This is also true with filmmakers. Western filmmakers pan their cameras mostly left to right and Iranian filmmakers do right to left.

Time seems such a universal concept and then I find out the different ways people perceive everything and remember “it’s all appearances to consciousness”
