Your Fave is Problematic: Elim Garak

quasi-normalcy:

  • Utterly amoral Machiavellian
  • Spent decades ruthlessly enforcing a brutal totalitarian regime by means of espionage, sabotage, torture and assassination (and never really repented for it in any way)
  • Lies reflexively
  • Is a dangerous man and would betray you and all your friends in an instant if he thought it would help him
  • Overcharges for alterations

You take that back.

Garak always charges the right amount for alterations.

Garak’s prices are very reasonable

#he’s a good tailor! and he would betray you and all of your friends for Cardassia#not for himself

Tbh this (last two tags) is why he’s not really “Machiavellian.” He doesn’t care about grabbing power for himself. He cares about what he has to do to serve broader systems he believes in.

every time I see something marketed as an eco-friendly replacement for something that you could simply not replace I can feel my face melting off. buying a new sustainably-harvested wooden soap dish from the zero waste kitchen utensil company that buys carbon offset credits is nice and all, but it’s not better for the environment than continuing to use the one from target that you already have. we can’t consume our way outta this one boys

Also, just buy a used one. Nothing new can ever be more environmentally friendly than a thing that does the same job made in 1992 that you get at the thrift store for $0.75

You’ve heard of competing access needs. Now consider:

Competing representation needs.

But no, seriously. This is one of the biggest things that pits people against each other in fandom spaces.

You’ve got people who need stories where men get to have completely platonic deep friendships with other men, need stories where men can be affectionate and support each other emotionally without it having to be romance. You’ve also got people who need stories about men being romantic with men. Both of these are valid. Whether either is canon doesn’t really matter because transformative works are allowed to be transformative and transformative works are works in their own right. It’s right there in the name.

But because there can only be One True Fanon, instead of acknowledging that different people have different needs and taking a live-and-let-live approach, you usually end up with both groups fighting to throw the other one under the bus first for trying to “steal” their representation.

Please no Oppression Olympics clowning on this post. Everyone needs stories. It’s an immutable part of the human condition.

tbh it’s really sad how most people who are questioning their gender/sexuality will say stuff like “well i feel like this label fits me and it describes my experiences really well and i feel happy using this label BUT i don’t 100% fit the definition so am i allowed to call myself that??”

like yes!! yes yes YES you are ABSOLUTELY allowed to call yourself that!! it’s OKAY if you don’t fit the rigid definition of a label, if it fits you and it makes you happy, you are totally allowed to use it!!

or people will be like “well i feel like BOTH these labels fit me am i allowed to use both?? do i have to pick just one i don’t want to they both fit me so well” you can use both!! even if a label is “contradictory” or whatever if it makes you happy you can use it!! you don’t have to fit the rigid definition, it’s okay!! do what makes you happy!!

at the end of the day it all boils down to what makes you happy!! if you feel like an identity fits you, you can use that label even if you don’t 100% fit the definition or you have another label that might “contradict” it!!

be happy!! live your life use whatever labels you want it’s okay!! laugh and live and smile and breathe go outside and look at the sky and feel the wind rush past you and smile and it’s all going to be okay. do what makes you happy!! i love you <3

Pretty much all labels are arbitrary shit we made up.  If it doesn’t refer to something you can measure and quantify, it’s just existing for our convenience.

Almost no one holds to everything their religion teaches, but they call themselves whatever anyway.  The same applies to any kind of identity thing.

There are no true Scotsmen.

I don’t wanna derail the post that genuinely asks about how Julian might see Sloan VS Garak but I think Julian said “you see, if you’re an older ridged alien with issues who may or may not be a spy who sat down at my table kinda brashly and came onto me and gave me a bit of a perverse look but in an oddly charming way that made me lowkey scared and horny, and one day you just came into my room at night to take me on a mission to get back to your nemesis that i also hate, and you are reactive to my good samaritan complex and you’re actually intelligent and challenge me, and accept that i challenge you, and genuinely respect and admire me, and have hidden compassion inside you, then your anthracite morality just makes you #Complex and you’re hot n sexy n i fantasize about living in a house with you under a red sun not yet completely swallowed up by an institution i love for its democratic ideals yet somewhere deep down resent for ostracizing me.

however if you’re some slimy dude from a shockingly cruel and immoral fringe of that supposedly democratic institution, who fancies himself an edgelord and tried to recruit me by tricking me and making me suffer rather than actually engaging with me at the same level, then you’re not remotely as clever as you think you are and your approaching me is creepy and your anthracite morality just makes your soul ugly and i deeply despise you and your methods. hope that helps”
