I like how fanon portrays Feanor as the batshit crazy wild-card and Fingolfin as the more collected, rational, thoughtful sibling. But you do realize Fingolfin only gets that characterization because he is compared to Feanaro-Spirit-of-Fiyaaaaaah, right? Because Fingolfin was the one who canonically got so mad he road off to Angband to fight Satan on his front lawn solo and ended up getting stomped for his efforts.

#Finarfin’s the rational one#but y'all forget that because he was rational enough to just skip the Silm altogether (via @worldflower

Exactly.

Saying someone’s rational by comparing them to Feanor is setting a hilariously low bar.

I’m gonna propose “I guess you haven’t read the silmarillion then :/” as a default response to anyone not understanding a reference to something obscure. even if it’s not remotely Tolkien related. I want to build up a perception that perhaps the sum total of human knowledge is contained in the silmarillion

For very complicated reasons, @deheerkonijn and I were talking about Elwing and Earendil and I was using my brand-new half-baked Silm knowledge to try to remember what they both were, and in looking back at the book I discovered that Elwing was described as “a white bird” but not, to the best of my knowledge, given a bird SPECIES.* So we decided that it would only be correct for her to be a goose.

Then we started talking about the fact that this makes Arwen part goose, and all the implications of that. Imagine, for instance, that she and Aragorn have been together for some time in the sweet honeymoon phase of their relationship - and then they have their first fight and she shrieks in rage and a full six-foot wingspan unfurls from her back. (Physically or metaphorically, take your pick.)

THEN we started joking about Elrond being a serious boring dad (yes I know there are conflicting fanon beliefs on this but just go with it for now) because the horrible goose gene skips a generation - but then we hit on the following truly galaxy brain headcanon: no, it doesn’t skip a generation, but it skips a CHILD every generation. So what if Elros had the goose genes and Elrond knew that it would come for one of his children, so when Elladan and Elrohir were born he was watching them very closely, wondering which one would turn out to be the normal one and which one would be the hellion. BUT WHAT IF (in opposition to popular fanon that they are both highly chaotic and mischievous) the twins are actually both very grave, somber, well-behaved children? And Elrond breathes a sigh of relief, thinking his own brother must have been a fluke -

 - and then Arwen is born, and the horrible-goose energy is unleashed tenfold.

*no one with actual knowledge of the Silm correct me please

Star Wars Characters as Silmarillion/ Lord of the Rings Characters

By myself and @arahir

Chewbacca is Galadriel (because he has been around the longest.)
C-3P0 is Elrond
Qui Gon is Gil Galad
Obi Wan is Glorfindel (and Gandalf)
R2-D2 is Cirdan the Shipwright

Darth Plaguies is Morgoth mostly so
Palpatine is Sauron
Kylo is the Mouth of Sauron
Vader is Gollum

Maz Kanata is Tom Bombadil

Luke is Bilbo (and Gandalf)
Rey is Frodo
Finn is Sam
Poe is Eomer

Leia Organa is Aragorn
Han Solo is Boromir

(though if you wanted to go full Silmarillion, Han and Leia could easily be Beren and Luthien.)

In a pinch, Obi Wan can be both Gandalf and Glorfindel. Or Luke can be both Bilbo and Gandalf. Depends on which generation needs guidance, I guess.

That’s all we came up with. Feel free to add or change anyone. Reblog or send me an ask or message.

Of Maeglin

the-silmarillion-for-dummies:

Maeglin: *turns twelve*
Eöl: Maeglin.
Maeglin: ?????
Aredhel: Who the heck is Maeglin –
Eöl: That is your name, son.
Maeglin: … okay.
Eöl: Want to come see the Dwarves and learn how to do cool stuff like your dad.
Maeglin: … not really.
Aredhel: You should go, he might actually kill you if you don’t.
Maeglin: *siiiiigh* okay fine.
Eöl: *takes Maeglin on adventures to Ered Lindon to visit Dwarves*
Maeglin: *learns all kinds of stuff*
Eöl: *takes him back home, then goes on an adventure without the fam*
Aredhel: Alright, little babyboo. Let me tell you of the Eldar and everything my family has been through and why this place sucks ass.
Maeglin: *cuddles up with mama for the invigorating tales*

faramireowyn:

As Maeglin grew to full stature he resembled in face and form rather his kindred of the Noldor, but in mood and mind he was the son of his father. His words were few save in matters that touched him near, and then his voice had a power to move those that heard him and to overthrow those that withstood him. He was tall and black-haired; his eyes were dark, yet bright and keen as the eyes of the Noldor, and his skin was white. Often he went with Eol to the cities of the Dwarves in the east of Ered Lindon, and there he learned eagerly what they would teach, and above all the craft of finding the ores of metals in the mountains.
