an unusually light red-shouldered hawk. this bird exhibits their strange coloration due to leucism, a genetic mutation in which melanin is underproduced, leading to lighter coloration. melanin is an important component in birds’ feathers, so in some cases these birds suffer from weak feathers & poor flight.

I will yell every dang time this shows up on my dash without the explanation that this! Is not a goddam baby crow! It is a rail chick!
These are baby crows!!

Crows are altricial which means they are helpless when they hatch and totally dependent on their parents for food and warmth.
Rails, and most other shore birds, are precocial. They hatch already able to run around and feed themselves and only need their parents for guidance and protection.
