Ferel and Lupaza, members of the Shakaar resistance cell, and friends of Kira Nerys.
deep space nine has many beloved characters, such as quonk, gack, woon,
I love how they’re all in character for this. Even the positioning.
Awkward scowling Worf at the back, behind Jadzia, away from everyone else but her. Odo, arms folded, behind Quark, with a hand ready to grab him. Quark in the middle so everyone can keep an eye on him. Julian smiling but obviously unhappy Garak isn’t there with him. Sisko and Jake close together. Jadzia smiling but clearly already annoyed at Worf asking repeatedly why they’re doing this. Kira and O’Brien at either side, because they’ve been fighting again. Sisko has clearly had enough of everyone’s shit, and wants this photo done already. Jake has been patiently sitting so long he’s writing his next story in his head.
It’s so perfect. It’s all them, every day kind of thing.
I want to see the outtakes. You just know there’s some good ones.
Compare this one to the previous. The war has amped up. No one’s really happy. Worf looks more at home though. Julian is still pouting at no Garak, just harder. The puppy dog eyes did not work.
While we know the war affected everyone before, there’s less of the lightness from before, because life’s harder. Except Julian who’s pissed his boyfriend is left out for the sixth year in a row.
DS9 cast photos are best photos. They really show how the season is.
A Concept:
Janice Poon’s “Feeding Hannibal” cookbook but for DS9
I know there are various recipes out there, but it would be neat to have them altogether and “official”.
“For the Cause” (S04E22, Stardate Unknown) does more than remind us the Maquis exist. It digs at and tortures Sisko as two strong pillars in his life defect and betray him, injuring him at a personal and a professional level. Garak and Ziyal’s story could have been mere filler, but the wrap up was worth it.
The shot of Ben waiting for Kassidy by himself in the cargo bay at the end of For the Cause is the perfect shot to capture how he has to feel after being betrayed by both his love, and a trusted officer. It only felt right to model my poster around it.
Chase Masterson (Leeta on Star Trek DS9) Story
I pulled up some old Star Trek interviews from the BBC via the Wayback Machine as they no longer exist on the BBC website. One of things I love about the cast and crew of DS9 is how passionate they are about the work they did on the show. Here is Chase’s story about a fan encounter and what it meant to her:
It was a convention in Denver. I was really tired, it was the end of the day and we’d done the whole convention and I’d just come off stage. I was exhausted, and I quietly, unobtrusively made my way to the bar, and was just going to get a beer and go to bed.
I said hello to the person I was sitting next to. She was a key figure in the US Navy, because she teaches people how to fight. She’d been on the front lines, and she knows a lot of people who’ve been on the front lines. She’s been in for something like fifteen or twenty years, so she’s a career girl, and her stories were amazing.
She told me stories of going, several years ago, in to rebuild Bosnia, and they would go as much as twenty-one days without a shower. She said they would come back from wherever they were, and before they’d even take a shower or do anything for themselves, there was sometimes a new tape of Star Trek shipped in from the States, a new episode that they hadn’t seen, and they sat down and watched that hungrily and joyfully.
She said that was because of the sense of unity that they got from watching our show. The feeling of hope and of all that is important.
It was such an electric experience sitting and listening to her say that. It’s just so wonderful to know not only that you entertain people, it’s wonderful to be on a show that actually means something to people and to the world.
So, instead of just getting my beer and going to bed, I sat there at the bar and cried, because it just touched my heart so deeply. It was really very very special and I’ll never forget it.
Things like that do happen quite a bit for us. People will come up and say what certain episodes meant because of their situations in their life. That’s one of the most beautiful things about the show. Obviously even though it’s about people in places far away, it’s just so personal to the fans.
USS Defiant and Deep Space Nine
2354, apparently
- Benjamin Sisko meets his future wife, Jennifer at Gilgo Beach, shortly after graduation.
- Stardate 32611.4: The Hansen family say their good-byes, and depart the Drexler outpost aboard the USS Raven on their mission to study the Borg. They do not file a flight plan, and no further contact with the Raven is made after their departure.
- According to the official Star Trek website, Ezri Tigan was born on New Sydney around this year.
2356, even worse
- Julian Bashir discovers that he was genetically enhanced and believes that his parents might have considered him as defective.
- Kathryn Janeway meets Tuvok for the first time.
- Kira Nerys becomes a member of the Shakaar resistance cell.
- The Raven is pursued by the Borg cube they were studying. Magnus, Erin, and Annika Hansen are assimilated by the Borg, following the capture of their starship, the Raven.
