are you actually thinking about intersectional justice and reform or are you just imagining revenge scenarios
“What if men got raped?”
we do. many men, cis and trans, are also victims of rape and incest.
“What if men could get pregnant!?”
some of us can.
“i bet they’d want abortions for their daughters if they were raped!”
yes. their daughters will continue to get them safely bc they can afford to send them out of state or to a private doc, for a fee. anti-abortion legislature targets the poor&working classes, especially BIPOC.
“all men should have to have vasectomies!”
if there was a policy of enforcing vasectomy on cis men, i will give you one guess which subsection of cis men in texas it would affect most, and if you say middle to upper class white Republican voters, you are wasting your guess
the purpose of anti-abortion legislation is not to prevent abortions. no anti-abortion law in existence has ever prevented abortions.
they have made them less safe. they have made them more lethal. they have never stopped them.
if your victim cannot access abortion services, forcing them to give birth to your child will ensure that they are legally bound to you forever, raising the child, or via child support & visitation. abusers have used this tactic for decades to trap people in marriages.
coerced marriage and reproduction aside, corrective rape is also weaponised against lesbians, trans men, and other “unfeminine” women, either to force them into marriage and parenthood or to force them to “embrace” their “womanhood”.
pregnancy can kill you, and comes with health risks. pregnancy makes irreparable changes to your body, and some experience chronic pain or health conditions from pregnancy for the rest of their lives.
for those with underlying conditions or who are underage, this is more likely.
even in the event someone is forced to give birth but not raise the child, carrying a pregnancy to term will force a recovery period where they must leave their jobs, and can make them more economically vulnerable - ie, force them to stay in abusive homes, prevent social mobility
anti-abortion legislation does not only criminalise surgical abortions, but can include chemical abortions induced via medication or home remedy. it could involve prosecuting someone for miscarrying - or accusing someone of having been pregnant to force medically invasive exams.
again, if you think it’s about “saving the life” of a foetus, think again, because it has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with economic and reproductive coercion
and also punishing people for having sex - including rape victims - with pregnancy.
I just want to point out that although Trump is certainly a rapist, actually most US Presidents were rapists. Like you’d be hard pressed to find a US President that didn’t rape someone while in office. And it hasn’t really done anything to their historical reputation, even when it is widely known. John F. Kennedy was a serial rapist. So was Lyndon B. Johnson. Obviously Bill Clinton. Ronald Reagan. Kennedy is regularly ranked in public opinion as one of the “best presidents,” even though his sexual assaults are widely known and pubic knowledge. President Obama is actually rare in that way, as he does not have any sexual assault accusations. The point is - this one isn’t a new thing. This isn’t a Trump thing. This has been a problem with men in power since the patriarchy began.
No more Presidents. No more patriarchy.
holy shit i had no idea about the reagan thing. links?
your daily reminder that Cyntoia Brown has to spend the holidays in prison because she defended herself from being raped at age 16. a petition was created that needs about 20k more signatures in order to bring more attention regarding a clemency to the Senator of Tennessee (where she is currently imprisoned). CYNTOIA BROWN NEEDS TO BE FREED.
a little more about this story for those who aren’t aware.
-Cyntoia Brown is now a 29 year old woman who is in federal prison for murder. Before the murder occurred, she was forced into human trafficking by an older man named “Cutthroat” at age 16 years old. She was repeatedly raped, beaten, and drugged by dozens of men everyday.
-In 2004, She murdered a 43 year old realtor named Johnny Allen who would sexually exploit her. There’s no doubt 16 year old who has been sexually abused multiple times by older men felt threatened at the moment. Regardless of the situation, this is rape. Let me repeat this again for the future idiots who are gonna try to defend this man. What Johnny Allen did to Cyntoia Brown is rape. She was 16, he was 43.
-In 2012, Cyntoia was sentencedto life in prison. The age she’s eligible for parole? 69 years old. She is now 29. If we don’t raise hell to the government of Tennessee, this woman might not get out until another 40 years. IF she is “eligible” for parole.
Claiming to have received consent, whether it is based in any truth or not, betrays a policing culture that refuses to recognize its own outsized power over those it alleges to protect and serve. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the case to determine whether the claim of consent is credible under law, but the fact that consent seems to be on offer as a defense at all speaks to how the police themselves view rape — a dynamic that needs immediate redress.
The accusations against Hall and Martins detail brutal rape in no uncertain terms. The young woman, who goes by the name “Anna Chambers” on social media but is withholding her legal name, says that on September 15, she and two male friends were driving near Brighton Beach. They were pulled over by the undercover detectives for being in a park after closing time, and their car was searched. The police found drugs in a bag next to Chambers; one friend was also found with pills on his person. The cops handcuffed only Chambers and drove her away in an unmarked van.
The teen alleges that the police drove to a nearby Chipotle parking lot and then, while she remained handcuffed, forced her to perform oral sex on them. One officer, she said, then raped her before leaving her on a street corner near the 60th Precinct. According to her attorney, she went to a hospital that night and was given a rape kit. Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that DNA found on Chambers matched the two officers, a fact confirmed by the teen’s attorney.
“I’m so hurt by this situation,” Chambers told me via Twitter direct message, before referring me to her lawyer. David said, “She’s devastated, She doesn’t leave home, she’s extremely depressed, and has been victimized again by these cops saying it was consensual.” He added, “This was a kidnapping, and this was rape.”
An NYPD spokesperson said on Wednesday that both officers have been suspended and that the Internal Affairs Bureau is working with the district attorney in the ongoing investigation. The New York Post reported Wednesday evening that a grand jury has been convened to hear evidence against the two officers. The detectives “should have been arrested that night,” said David.
More “false accusations against the privileged never happen, however privileged groups will use false accusations against groups they want to hurt, for example the long history of white people accusing black men to excuse violence against them, the “predatory trans woman” myth, trans people being convicted of “rape by deception” for not disclosing their birth assignment, abuse victims being victims of retaliatory accusations etc”
The thing that disgusts me the most about the James Deen scandal, if it’s true* is he literally gets paid to have any type of sex he can possibly think of with women –sometimes a harem of women– yet he still feels the need to rape them, or brutally assault and humiliate them.
*Personally I think it’s true. I think he did it. He has a predatory air about him that always made me go “there’s something about him that I can’t put my finger on and it’s not in a good way”
Okay but rape isn’t about getting sex at all, it’s about power and domination over other people so like, people who have a lot of sex also being rapists isn’t a surprise at all. It’s like saying “Well he gets given a ton of free food every day at work, so I was shocked to learn in his spare time he’s been buying a lot of furniture”.
So Jessica Jones is very important to me, as a survivor, and I was extremely amped up to watch the series ASAP but rape and implied rape in film can really get to me. So I asked my lovely squad if anyone could pre-screen for me, let me know what timestamps to skip over, and two of them kindly did, and then Aili took it a step further (by binging the whole thing and probably not sleeping again).
If, like me, you need to not watch certain things, but you want to know what details you may be missing, Aili’s list under the cut provides timestamps for start and end of segments to skip and brief non-graphic descriptions of what the subject matter of the skipped sections is, without getting spoilery.
