Warning for the 2017 IT movie

I haven’t seen any posts about this, so I would appreciate it if y'all could share this so people are prepared when they see the movie. This is a bit of a minor spoiler, but it’s important to sexual abuse survivors and child sexual abuse survivors. In the movie, a young female character is approached by her father and he makes some advances towards her, but this is initially deflected. Later in the movie, the third time the father is featured, there is an extremely triggering scene where the father becomes enraged when she refused to let him take advantage of her anymore and he grabs her by the ankles and attempts to assault her. He doesn’t succeed, but this scene was enough that I had a panic attack in the theater and I wish I was warned about this before I saw the movie. PLEASE spread this around so people are prepared for this when they see this movie. Just to reiterate, this is the third time the father is featured in the movie, right after the kids escape the house.

I see a lot of witches drying rose petals for floral arrangements or even making rose water from them. Please keep in mind that roses grown for florists are over treated with pesticides and fertilizers. Anything made from these petals isn’t safe to ingest. 

If you’re doing work that requires making a rose preparation for ingestion or topical application that will be absorbed into the skin, you’ll want to get rose petals from a shop that sells for these purposes. 

Or grow your own organically. Old fashioned varieties rather than the hybrid teas you see in flower arrangements are usually grown for these purposes because they grown more easily without intense treatments. 

THIS IS IMPORTANT Y’ALL.

As a witch who worked at a florist, whenever I ‘cleaned’ the roses for sale (taking off excess leaves, slicing off thorns, etc), I would immediately wash my hands afterward. The chemicals were so bad I would feel immediate irritation and would have skin issues if I didn’t scrub clean every 30 minutes or so (I aimed for 1 wash after every 12).

It’s especially worth noting that roses from florists are often (almost always) flown in from other countries where the laws about pesticides are a lot more lax. Originally we got ours from a grower in Colombia, which wasn’t too bad, but I believe we switched to Ecuador and holy moly I don’t know what the company we got it from used but it was strong. As in ‘The smell of the chemicals hit me like a wall as soon as I opened up the dozen, despite them having traveled all the way from Ecuador in a freezer’ strong.

It was so bad I legitimately had worries about how handling the roses would effect my long term health, and gods above and below I felt for the workers over there that had to deal with these pesticides regularly and up close.

Also, if you buy your own rose bush to use for ingestion purposes, DO NOT use the petals off of it for the first year UNLESS you got it from a organic nursery. Because most places do spray the roses with pesticides and fertilizers from seedling on up, and it will take a year for all that stuff to work it’s way out of the plant’s system.

If you need rose petals to ingest ASAP, I would strongly suggest checking out tea shops. Many local or online sellers have rose teas that are lovely, and either have rose hips (which might not be as fancy as petals and have a more citrus-y flavor, but are the fruit borne from a rose and thus symbolic as all hell) or rose petals mixed in with their teas. This are absolutely edible, and are easily accessible to boot.

I really hope people see this because it is very important. Roses from the floral section are not intended for consumption. I have found whole rose buds at herb stores, Asian grocery stores (in cooking sections), and tea stores. I would highly suggest going to those places for roses. They may also sell tea with a high quantity of rose petals which you can use in place of pure roses. Another note: jasmine tea is not tea with dried jasmine. Most jasmine varieties are not edible and you can’t use dried jasmine in tea unless it is a variety specifically marketed as being edible (jasmine sambac aka Pikake)

This may also be true even if you buy your own roses and plant them… many pesticides are systemic (meaning they are aborbes into the plant) and roses are treated witj a LOT of fungicides, pesticides, etc because roses are assholes. And those may last even when you bring them home. Care is (usually) taken with plants like herbs or veggies intended for consumption thwt isn’t taken with roses because no one expects anyone to.eat it.

I was just thinking about whether or not I could put rose petals from the store in tea, and was like “better not.”

- the vagina is the tubular ‘internal’ sex organ that some people have.
- the ‘vulva’ is the set of external sex organs that people with vaginas have. it includes (but not only):

  • pubic mound 
  • labia minora and majora (inner/outer ‘lips’)
  • clitoris and clitoral hood 
  • vulval vestibule (found in between your labia minora)
  • urethra (where you urinate from)
  • vaginal opening

-vaginas naturally contain a balance of different bacterias. this bacteria protects the vagina from external bacteria and fungus, provides natural disinfectants and maintains a healthy vaginal pH of 3.5-4.5.

-vaginal pH varies from person to person, day to day, depending on your cycle, your diet and many other external factors,

-all vaginas have a scent. all of them. no two people smell exactly the same, and you shouldn’t expect your vagina (or anyone else’s) to smell fruity or floral.

- if your worried about your scent, you can place perfume or an essential oil to an area around your vulva but not on it. some places like between your thighs or on your lower stomach, for example,

-your body secretes natural fluids called discharge. discharge is how your vagina self cleanses. it is completely normal and vital to healthy vaginal function.

-discharge can vary in amount, color, texture and scent depending on your cycle. each person is different. if your discharge is unusual or abnormal to you and your unique body - visit a doctor if possible.

-abnormal discharge can be green, grey, very yellow, smelly, itchy, chunky, etc.

-abundant discharge can be annoying. you can remove excess discharge in your shower by inserting one clean finger into your vagina, moving it from one side to another and ‘scooping’ the discharge out. repeat as needed. this reduces the amount of discharge found on your panties and in turn, reduces vaginal scent.

- dead skin cells and oil can build up between your clitoris and your clitoral hood, so it’s important to lift your hood up and rinse thoroughly so it doesnt harden. 

-washing your “external” vulvar areas such as your public mound and outer lips is okay, though some may find skin here more sensitive.

-don’t douche. you may think it helps but it only masks any problems while causing more. douching throws of your flora, alters your PH and forces bacteria into your cervix.

-water and a soft, clean wash cloth is all you need to clean your vulvar areas that contain a mucous membrane. you do not need to wash these areas. applying soaps or cleaners to these areas removes of natural necessary lubricants and bacteria. this may cause irritation, inflammation, major discomfort and dryness. some amount of moistness should always be present.

-a vast majority of vaginal washes, even those touted as hypoallergenic, still contain dyes and fragrances which are known irritants. read the label.

-while Summer’s eve is a lesser of evils with a PH of 3.0 - 3.5 (still not quite correct), it is still a cleanser. vaginal washes are used to cleanse “bad” bacteria from your vulva. they also wash away the “good” bacteria needed to maintain a healthy balance.

-castile soaps (like Dr. Bronner’s) has a pH of about 8.9. these are not suggested.

-never insert any cleansing agents into your vagina.

-the information above applies to any gels, deodorants, perfumed products and wipes, too. these can all disturb your natural balance.

-while they still pose a possible risk of irritation, unscented baby wipes are the lesser of evils regarding “freshening up”.

-pay attention to your irritants and triggers. different people, different reactions

-everyone has different stances and different methods that work for them. if you aren’t experiencing vaginal discomfort or odd changes, you don’t have to discontinue certain product use. i do, however, recommend a trial period of leaving these products alone due to their effects on your vagina.

-allow your vagina to breathe. keep too-tight clothing to a minimum. cotton panties are the best option next to not wearing any at all.
rotate the washcloth and towels you use to clean and dry your vagina.

-urinating after masturbation or sex reduces the amount of bacteria in your urethra wiping ‘front to back’ keeps rectal bacterial away from your vagina.

-naturally, food alters your vagina. balancing your diet in general and including things like pineapples, strawberries, yogurt, soy (the list goes on!) can influence your pH.

-beverages like water, cranberry juice and pineapple juice are also proven to improve vaginal health, and may even improve taste.

-adding a probiotic supplement can increase the amount of “good” bacteria called lactobacillus-your vagina.

-the less ideal your vaginal balance/pH is, the more vulnerable you are to infections and STDs.

-when it comes to internet home remedies, your mileage my vary. try everything with caution and research thoroughly.

How to tell if a video is a screamer

halloween is fast approaching, and sending screamers has become an increasingly popular trend over the past few years. while some people may enjoy them, they can also trigger anxiety attacks in others.

  • check the section/category of a video. if it’s under “comedy”, “prank”, “horror”, or something similar, close the tab immediately.
  • comments are also a giveaway. scroll to the comments section before playing a video. if comments are disabled, there’s a likely chance the video is a screamer. close the tab right away. if you see comments like “whoa, that made me jump!”, close the window! and if it’s impossible to disable comments, look for multiple comments deleted by the creator.
  • check out the video itself, while it’s paused. if it has very low music (this makes the audience want to turn the volume up, so the scream is louder and scarier), or if it has very small text (which makes you want to go into full screen), that’s a good indication that it’s a screamer. exit out and close the tab!
  • look at the content of the video. if the clip itself deals with the scary or supernatural, like a film about ghosts, you can’t be certain. be careful, and exit the tab if the content seems triggering. pause the video and forward all the way to the end. If everything is good feel free to watch. if a frame with a scary picture comes up, close the tab immediately.
  • if the video shows a room or picture, and invites you to “find what’s wrong in the picture”, or “find _____”, close the window immediately! 
  • there’s a new trend going on where videos describing people reacting to screamers are actually screamers themselves. if you suspect this, scroll down and see the comments. if the maker of the video disabled comments to purposely lead viewers to believe the video is genuine, scroll down just enough to see the video time, so you don’t see the video itself. Turn the volume down, just in case it is a screamer, and if the video plays out and there’s no scream, it’s safe to watch.
  • check the time on the video. if it’s suspiciously short, exit the tab.
  • look at the related or recommended videos. if any of them fit the above, the video is a screamer.

also there’s another one that you forgot which i usually look for first when it comes to wondering if a video is a screamer or not, and that is checking the likes to dislikes ratio. if the dislikes are an abundant amount, close the tab. this is a fairly common one that i usually remember.
