my brother had a brilliant idea that i wanted to share with other people who have four-legged family members: he trained our two cats to go directly to the door when they hear the fire alarm.
obviously at first the fire alarm sent them scrambling for cover, but he started slowly by giving them treats whenever it went off, when someone burned food or forgot to open the fireplace flu. he then progressed to calling them to the door to offer treats immediately after the alarm went off. and it actually wasn’t too long before the cats voluntarily started going to the door upon hearing the alarm.
i think this was genius because in the event of a real emergency we know exactly where the cats will be and we will not have to waste precious time trying to find them to rescue them. i think this method would work equally well with dogs and probably other free-roaming pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. and i certainly encourage others to give it a shot!
How are turkey skin and bones not safe? Please elaborate.
Dunno about skin, but Turkey bones, and avian bones in general, are really easy to shatter. If a dog eats said shards, it could tear up their insides.
Important for all pet users!!
The skin is very fatty and can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can lead to a very expensive hospital stay, and is quite painful. When in doubt, best not to feed human food.
Important PSA for this (and every) holiday season! As someone with dogs and cats in her life, both of these are nice to have on hand!
people have these “my dog is a democrat” stickers and I like to imagine them with increasingly unlikely animals professing more niche political opinions:
my parrot is a democratic socialist
my arctic fox is an anarchopastoralist
my catfish believes in the divine right of kings
“My dog is a democrat” stickers Cause plenty spontaneous snickers, But I can’t help ponder Where else their views wander, On what other points my pet bickers.
To my mind the option it brings Of increasingly niche-seeming things Your critter conceives. MY catfish believes In the heavenly birthright of kings.
here’s my take: i think way more people on star trek should have pets.
like i get that its like a cgi budget issue or whatever and also probably they dont want a bunch of dogs and shit just running around where all the doors are automatic, but consider.same rules as dorm pets. if they can live happily in containment u can bring em.
show me space hamster. space lizard. space super fucked up fish.space birds! thats a big one.
like could you imagine how choice it would be if riker had a pet lizard that he let crawl around on his shoulders and sometimes he gets called to the bridge for an emergency and doesnt have time to put it back so he just shows up with the lizard still on him and the whole crew has to pretend everything is normal when they get video transmission from a hostile planet and their first officer is negotiating peace with a little scaly dude crawling on his head and sticking its tongue out
Privately owned hotels, motels, etc., can still legally turn you away if you have pets with you. It just happened to Hurricane Harvey evacuees. Please do not go to a hotel trying to demand that they take your pets - You can get turned away, (the police will assist if needed) and you may end up back on the road in the storm. Which is the most dangerous place to be.
There has been a post going around saying that the PETS act means that hotels have to accept your pets… This is FALSE! The PETS act allows FEMA to spend government funds on creating pet friendly evacuation and disaster response plans, to fund pet friendly shelters, to fund veterinary services, and to pay pet fees to hotels that accept pets for displaced families who receive vouchers after a disaster. It has no bearing on private businesses, private businesses are not required to change or amend their pet policies.
Some hotels do, however, voluntarily change their policies during a storm. This will be dependent on each individual hotel owner, (they are usually franchises). So the best thing you can do is call the individual hotel before you go.
To evacuate, you will need to identify pet friendly hotels, shelters, etc.
To find pet friendly hotels, you can use BringFido.com or Booking.com (on Booking, select “Pet Friendly” in the filters).
Please be safe and have a backup plan in place. I hope that cuddling your furry loved ones brings you much comfort.
I’m gonna keep reblogging this through the day.
I was asked to reblog this post to help clarify the misinformation from a popular post that is circulating, which claims that no hotel can turn you away with your pet due to a FEMA ruling from Katrina.
PSA for Hurricane Irma Victims about their pets!!!!
[An image of text which says:
If you are evacuating to a hotel/motel and they say they DON’T take pets, don’t get ugly, but simply tell them that it is against the law and FEMA established that after Hurricane Katrina!
The Pets Evacuation and Standards Act (PETS) was a bi-partisan initiative in the United States House of Representatives to require states seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance to accomodate pets and service animals in their plans for evacuating residents facing disasters.
