so ofmd goes into detail about lighthouses, and how they are guides but mainly signals meant to help sailors avoid the dangers of land; in historical cartography (mapmaking), kraken iconography was used to do the exact same thing. krakens on a map indicated dangerous waters (geographically, territorially, etc) that sailors were cautioned to either avoid or face the consequences, the only real difference between the two symbols being that the kraken is much more outwardly intimidating, whereas the lighthouse seems innocuous and even safe until you’ve crashed against the rocks do you see where im going with this
i fucking love the nuance of stede and reading all these metas that contradict and build on each other. is stede a dickhead, is stede a softie, is stede a middle manager gone mad with power? is he passively suicidal, is he incredibly courageous, is he incredibly clever, or is he just really, really stupid? does he know that he loves edward, does he know that edward loves him? does he know how he likes his eggs? in one moment he’s horrified at violence and in the next he’s noting the gusto. he’s gasping in terror of blackbeard and then they’re swapping clothes. he fuckeries people over and over again, so often and so well that it’s hard to spot even in retrospect. he wants to talk it through as a crew but says jack shit nothing about his own feelings. he’s charming he’s annoying he’s self-centered he’s traumatized he’s deranged he’s a villain he’s a hero he’s non-judgmental he’s the judgiest ass on the show he’s oblivious he’s watchful he’s supportive he’s dismissive. he’s a bitch he’s a lover he’s a child he’s a mother he’s a sinner he’s a saint he is not ashamed (except he is tho) he’s your hell he’s your dream he’s nothing in between
