who is she? we don’t even have her name, just what we can assume is the name ed’s father wrote over her innate tenderness and the irrepressible human sense that we all deserve better— we all deserve dignity.
because she tells ed, we’re not meant for fine things. she repeats back the lessons she learned, feeds him the poison they filled her with too. she is trying to protect ed, to make sure he doesn’t know the brutal consequences of reaching above your station.
but. BUT.
she gives him that silk. she puts in it his hand and encourages him to touch it, to learn the feel of soft things and being worthy of comfort and a home you don’t have to bow and scrape in, a world that looks at you and sees you.
she says it’s not for them: but she brought that silk home. who knows why, who knows if ed was supposed to leave a home that wasn’t really his with that red silk in his pocket.
but she still brought it there, and she gave it to him to hold. despite her words, i’d really like to hope that inside ed’s mother was the same fire in ed’s belly, telling him no. this isn’t right, and i deserve better.
