On this day, 13 May 1985, Philadelphia police attacked the home of Black liberation and environmentalist group MOVE with automatic weapons, then dropped a bomb on it, killing five adults and six children, destroying 61 homes in the predominantly Black neighbourhood, and making 250 people homeless.
Almost 500 police officers fired over 10,000 rounds of ammunition into the house, which was filled with women and children, while other officers blew holes in the walls with explosives. The police commissioner then ordered the house to be bombed, which they did using an improvised device made from C4 given to them by the FBI.
Only two people survived the blast and ensuing fire: Ramona Africa, and Michael Ward, aged 13. While no officials were prosecuted, Ramona Africa was subsequently jailed for seven years on riot and conspiracy charges. The incident occurred during the tenure of Philadelphia’s first Black mayor, a Democrat named Wilson Goode.
The children killed were named Katricia Dotson (Tree), Netta, Delitia, Phil, and Tomasa Africa and the adults were Rhonda, Teresa, Frank, CP, Conrad, and John Africa.
In April 2021, it was revealed that anthropologists at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania had the bones of one of the children, unbeknownst to the families.

An acquittal in the shooting death of a young Indigenous man by a white farmer in Saskatchewan has left First Nations stunned and outraged, with protesters taking to the streets across Canada against what’s being seen a symbol of a racist and severely broken criminal justice system.

After deliberating for 13 hours, an all-white jury in Battleford, Saskatchewan found 56-year-old Gerald Stanley not guilty of second-degree murder in the 2016 death of Colten Boushie of the Red Pheasant First Nation.

Cries of despair filled the courtroom and family members burst into tears as the verdict was announced Friday night. “You’re a murderer. You murdered my son,” said Colten’s mother, Debbie Baptiste.

News of the acquittal left Boushie’s uncle Alvin Baptiste “shocked,” he told reporters outside the courthouse.

“My nephew has been denied justice,” said Baptiste. “A white jury came out with a verdict of not guilty of Gerald Stanley, who shot and killed my nephew. This is how they treat us First Nations people, and it’s not right. Something has to be done about this.”

“We hoped for justice for Colten,” said Boushie’s cousin Jade Tootoosis. “However, we did not see it. We did not feel it throughout this entire process. We will fight for an appeal, and answers to all the racism that my family has experienced from the day that Colten was shot until the jury delivered the verdict of not guilty. We will not stop our pursuit of justice.”

“Two women, ages 36 and 22, were slaughtered in their apartment along with their 5 and 11-year-old children. According to the Times Union, all four were bound and their throats slit.”

Their names were Shanta Myers (36), Brandi Mells (22), Jeremiah “JJ” Myers (11), and Shanise Myers (5). They are survived by their 16-year-old son Isaiah, who was out of the house at the time of the murder.

None of the perpetrators—participants in mass murder—answered for their crimes. No one was charged, no trials were held, at least not of those who had killed blacks.“

The Red Summer of 1919 still is one of the longest seasons of domestic terrorism in the US that goes unremarked for most. 

My grandfather had kin in Elaine Arkansas. He never got to meet them (they died in the riots), but he told me that the stories about what happened is part of why he raised his family in the North. Chicago had race riots that year too, but Elaine is considered one of the worst in history. In part because they literally tortured survivors to get them to testify against each other. 

People do realize that you can’t call some terrorism if it happened before terrorism was a thing, right?

Terrorism was a thing way back before this happened.

So it appears that a white man wearing dark clothes, a tactical vest, and a military haircut murdered two black men who were walking on the street in Baton Rouge. 

I wouldn’t call these “random” killings.

“Powell, 48, died May 20, 2009, after being kept in a human cage in Goodyear’s Perryville Prison for at least four hours in the blazing Arizona sun. This, despite a prison policy limiting such outside confinement to a maximum of two hours.

The county medical examiner found the cause of death to be due to complications from heat exposure. Her core body temperature upon examination was 108 degrees Fahrenheit. She suffered burns and blisters all over her body.
Witnesses say she was repeatedly denied water by corrections officers, though the c.o.’s deny this. The weather the day she collapsed from the heat (May 19 – she died in the early morning hours of May 20) arched just above a 107 degree high.

According to a 3,000 page report released by the ADC, she pleaded to be taken back inside, but was ignored. Similarly, she was not allowed to use the restroom. When she was found unconscious, her body was covered with excrement from soiling herself.

Powell, who was serving a 27-month sentence for prostitution, actually expired after being transported to West Valley Hospital, where acting ADC Director Charles Ryan made the decision to have her life support suspended.
