Our Flag Means Death S01E05 - Lucius Spriggs & Izzy Hands
OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
This is Happening (1x07)
“I’ve never had anyone take interest in my form before.”
“Well, you’ve never met anyone worth a damn then.”

I’m incredible at keeping secrets, my mum thought I liked girls for years.
Was just trying to sleep earlier today when a random thought smacked me in the face.
Lucius and Pete really did just hook up out of nowhere huh?
And, rather than ignore my Dumbo brain and sleep, I theorized and now I’m on Tumblr talking about it.
I fully believe Lucius ‘checked the rations’ with Pete intending it the same way he sketched Fang and had uncomfortable exchanges with Izzy, ie a flirtation/fling without real feelings behind it, but then the Art of Fuckery episode happened and while everyone was worried about him Pete did something more.
Pete whittled him a lame ass finger that barely passes as a thumb.
And yeah, we’ve all seen the episode and know this, but idk if anyone’s ever thought too hard about it. Lucius is used to being the object of desire, of wooing and flirting as he likes, but I think that was the first time anyone had truly gone out of their way to do something nice for him.
And now Lucius is head over heels for our favorite stereotypical pirate because he did what no one else had thought to.
Thank you for coming to my sleep deprived Ted talk
Taika followed me on Twitter in like 2018 or 2019 or something like that and he would message me sometimes which was the craziest thing because I so wasn’t interested in being a performer but he would just be like, ‘Hey, man, I love your videos’ […] I remember one of my friends joking with me at the time, she was like, ‘Oh, my God he’s so gonna put you in something one day’, and I was like ‘That’s not how that works’. - Nathan Foad
Lucius was so firmly in Stede’s corner with his relationship with Ed, always getting Ed to see how stupid he was being and how he was hurting Stede, demanding better of him for his friend. And every time, he watched Ed make up for his mistakes with hugely meaningful gestures. He saw Ed put himself in danger and then throw away his life to save Stede. And then after all that, he saw the devastating fallout of STEDE breaking ED’S heart.
I know Lucius is gonna be pissed off at Ed for The Incident, but I would love to see him be pissed off at Stede too. Like “WHAT the FUCK did you DO to that TINY SWEET MAN who ADORED you?! After all my hard work getting him to be better for you, YOU threw it away?! YOU BROKE HIM. YOU BROKE THE SOFT KIND MAN SO BAD HE TRIED TO KILL ME!!!”
BLACK PETE and LUCIUS SPRIGGS + being happy, in love gay pirates together
Along the lines of how Our Flag Means Death is constantly shifting between genres (muppet comedy, gritty pirate realism, British Navy Master & Commander realism, etc etc), I want to say for the record that I have zero idea if Calico Jack is still alive, because I don’t know if his death took place in the muppet world of almost zero consequences or in the gritty pirate realism world where a cannonball to the chest actually means something. He could pop up next season in a neck brace bitching about swimming back to shore after the British shot him and I’d be like “Yeah, that tracks,” and he could never show up again because he’s dead dead and I’d be like, “Yeah, that also tracks,” and it’s both brilliant and baffling how the show pulls off this melange of genres in a way that keeps us guessing like this.
I should clarify that I firmly believe Lucius’s “death” is in the Muppet-y world of zero consequences, ie he’s definitely alive, for an endless list of reasons but one has got to be the stupid like comedy “swoop!” sound effect that plays when he goes overboard and the fact his shoe does a little spin in the air like a cartoon character falling off a cliff before it tumbles after him. It’s hard to see or hear because of the dark atmosphere and Avalanche’s opening notes playing but it’s definitely there and to me is a very Doylist signal to take Ed’s “confirmation” after with a grain of salt.
