It’s a small detail but both the LOTR movies and the BBC radio adaptation left this out, and I think it’s quite telling in its way:
So the oath of service that Denethor has Pippin swear, in the books, ends with “from this hour henceforth, until my lord release me, or death take me, or the world end.”
If that doesn’t tell you something about the state that Gondor and its steward are in… It’s not a joke, it’s a serious official pledge of loyalty, and among the conditions for breaking it they saw fit to list the end of the world. Kind of drives home how well they know that is a thing that might happen any day now. The world ending is no abstraction or exaggeration, to Gondor.
it’s just the you don’t really belong anywhere and you’re not really human but someone loves you anyway that gets to me. like hands to my heart for He shook his head, as if finding words useless, and murmured: “I love him. He’s like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no.” because what else is there to say?
βItβs not always a misfortune being overlooked,β said Merry. βI was overlooked just now by β no, no, I canβt speak of it. Help me, Pippin! Itβs all going dark again, and my arm is so cold.β
βLean on me, Merry lad!β said Pippin. βCome now! Foot by foot. Itβs not far.β
βAre you going to bury me?β said Merry.
βNo, indeed!β said Pippin, trying to sound cheerful, though his heart was wrung with fear and pity. βNo, we are going to the Houses of Healing.β

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
2001 | dir. Peter Jackson
If there’s one thing I will never understand it’s Lord of the Rings fans wanting to be an elf in Middle Earth. I mean, sure they’re graceful and pretty but they live too damn long and having to witness an eternity of stupidity from the species around them. Like, imagine being Elrond and basically witnessing a cringe compilation of the human race. Nope. No thanks.
I’ve been witnessing a cringe compilation of the human race my whole life. Elrond is not special.
TOLKIEN WEEK | Scenery Appreciation
There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
