there’s romantic music playing as spock mind melds with him. i wonder what this all means
tbh though if i were mccoy i’d be pretty fucking fed up with spock too. imagine you’re a doctor, you dedicate your life to learning how care for hundreds of different life forms and species across the galaxy, and then your wife divorces you, which leads you to enlisting as a doctor for starfleet. this is WAY outside of your comfort zone, you hate adventure and you’d rather be sittin on a porch in the sun with some sweet tea in hand and your daughter on your knee, but you ain’t got nowhere else to go, and who are you if you aren’t a doctor? you’ve dedicated your whole life and so much more to healing. so you enlist, you get assigned to a starship. not your dream job, but if there’s one thing leonard mccoy knows how to do it’s treat patients. and then THIS MEDICAL MARVEL MOTHERFUCKER comes in with his fucked up gene spliced half human half vulcan biology and the rarest most obscure blood type even among vulcans with ZERO precedent for his existence or medical baseline and also happens to be THE WORST PATIENT IN HISTORY. REFUSES to sit still and follow instructions. always making smart ass comments about your silly human emotionalism. you’ll get insane fucking readings and be like “spock i think you’re dying” and the bastard will answer with a straight face “yes. that’s just pon farr.” “can you tell me how to treat it?” “no.” and then just walks out of the fucking sickbay. you’re constantly busting your ass trying to figure out how to keep this human-alien catboy mix’n’match medical nightmare from hell alive and healthy and all you get in return is backhanded compliments from an emotionally stunted fruit. and you can’t even complain about it to your best friend because he’s too busy doodling this obstinate motherfucker’s name all over his notebook while eye-fucking him on the middle of the bridge. hell i’d be an alcoholic too.
Star Trek Universe textbooks
so the other day I started thinking about starfleet academy and the kind of……e-textbooks bones would have there….because I…think about these things and basically I got kind of carried away?? also I am like 99% sure that mccoy’s thesis was over the management of aviophobia I mean come on
“You can see he’s suffering, he needs me as his doctor, so since I’m assigned to this ship, so’s he, or would you like to explain to Captain Pike why the Enterprise warped into a crisis without one of its medical officers?”
i just think characters who are kind & gentle doctors/scientists are inherently gay. mad scientists are also inherently gay. science is gay
Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond (2016)
i think people forget that leonard mccoy is a genius too??
like yeah they’re always talking about the genius and incredible intelligence of kirk and spock but bones is up there with them
first of all he’s the cmo of starfleet’s flagship like he has more authority than the fucking captain so you know he’s a hella good doctor
he is a master surgeon and is an expert in biology, psychology, xenobiology, and god knows what else, not to mention he’s spock’s doctor–spock who is the literal first of his species, spock whose whole being is entirely unique–meaning that bones is making shit up while he goes when taking care of spock
not to mention how inventive he is?? remember when they were sent to that faux old west place to act out the OK corral and he made a fucking tranquilizer out of some snake venom and other shit and put it in a sort of bomb thing?? like that isn’t crazy resourceful and ingenious?
mccoy is a fucking genius he has so much knowledge up in that head of his idk how he sorts through it all
Don’t forgot the Friar Laurence-esque stunt he pulls to fake Kirk’s death in “Amok Time”
Or using shelter building material with silicon in it to heal the Horta, the first ever discovered silicon-based life form, in “The Devil in the Dark”
and what about “jorney to babel” where he saved both spock and his father, which was almost impossible, because he’d never done anything like that before and the ship was shaking like god knows what????
and “the empath”??? when he literally knocked kirk and spock out so that kirk doesn’t have to make that difficult decision and spock doesn’t get hurt???? even though in this case the chance of mccoy’s survival was like 13% and he knew it very well???? HE BASICALLY KNOCKED HIS FRIENDS OUT TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF FOR THEM
so yes. mccoy is amazing. we need to appreciate him.
Look ya’ll, the reason the Enterprise crew is so good at what they do is because they are all geniuses at the top of their fields. Their intelligence is just typically individually assigned to their specific focuses.
Jim is ridiculously gifted in strategy, survival, and thinking outside the box. If you’re in a tough spot, you want Jim around because he will find a way out of it.
Spock is ridiculously gifted in logic/fact based knowledge and scientific data, and he can use that to manipulate a situation. If you need to talk your way out of something diplomatically, you want Spock on your side.
Bones is basically a god-tier physician. He’s fought death and won more times than he can count, and he’s eradicated at least 3 diseases through his research and methods, and you may quote me on that.
Uhura knows more dialects than most people can count and is fluent in all of them including body language and translations. She’s uncovered four separate instances of identity theft among higher ranking officials on various planets by noticing the cadence of their speech was off ever so slightly.
Sulu’s expertise lies in piloting. Chekov’s lies in math and physics. Scotty’s lies in engineering.
They are all stupidly good at what they do, and that combined with sheer dumb luck saves their lives more times than they can count. It only works because they’re each so far above average.

Anyway I’m back on my “Scotty and Bones should be friends” bullshit. One time Scotty walks in on Bones looking at his PADD and repeating words out loud and Scotty’s like “mate what are you doing?” and Bones is like “oh I’m learning Vulcan but intentionally badly and with an exaggerated Southern accent so I can piss off Spock” and Scotty, who’s still fresh off Spock’s “you mean they disappeared in a manner not consistent with the usual workings of a transporter” comment and who recognizes the frustrating comedic potential of learning Vulcan with a Scottish accent, pulls up a chair and immediately joins him
