Okay but to build off some previous posts of mine we know that Bashir is kind and compassionate but also capable of murder and deception if that’s what the situation calls for. And we know that Garak specializes in deception and murder but honestly he also has quite a bit of compassion and kindness and what’s interesting is both of them are the opposite Bashir wears his kindness on his sleeves because he’s proud of it whereas Garak wears his deceptiveness on his sleeve (the. irony. but that’s also the correct statement) and hides a softer nature. something something recognition of the self though the other

#I’ve had this idea in my head for a while that#on some level#Bashir and Garak are like…very similar people#almost IDENTICAL people actually at the core#but#have come under VASTLY different influences and circumstances#so like#you start off with two very intelligent but somewhat odd little children#who both have the POTENTIAL for huge amounts of compassion AND deception#who are both capable of idealism AND ruthless pragmantism#but one of them is raised in the Federation and internalizes Federation values#while the OTHER is raised on a Cardassia controlled by a restrictive military and secret police#and internalizes THOSE values#and so they turn out–like you said–almost like inversions of each other#but it’s really kind of like they’re REFLECTIONS of each other#but they’re being reflected through some kind of distorted fun house mirror#because one of the things Bashir and Garak have in common#is just HOW MUCH  they have both clearly been shaped by their environments and the things they have been TAUGHT to value#because they also share a kind of innate malleability and adaptability and desire to ‘perform well’ and please those around them#and a lot of both of their arcs on the show actually involve them coming to terms with and DECIDING#how much of the values that have been instilled in them by others#are values they actually want to keep#and taking control and gaining agency over who and what they are going to be#rather than being content to be something shaped according to someone else’s idea of what they should be

Go off.

#validation!#but yeah#this is part of why I think they’re so compelling together#and why they seem so drawn to each other in a way#it’s that despite how different they seem to be–and are!–#there’s just something they can’t help but recognize in each other#that’s really it#they RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER#and so even through all their bullshit and deception and walls they both put up#there’s still always going to be a bit where they look at each other and just go#'oh. there you are. i know you.’#without them even realizing it [x]

Ok but imagine a soulmate!AU where Julian has a phrase in cardassian on his arm that he had never really bothered to translate (with all that “I don’t want a serious long-term relationship”) and Garak has none ‘couse it’s a Terrian species thing or something, but one day they argue over a book especially fierce and Julian decide to learn cardassi to prove that he didn’t “miss the whole point in translation” but that it was just really damn boring story, and when he can understand language to some point he looks at his mark and it reads “It’s doctor Bashir, isn’t it? Of course it is. May I introduce myself?”

Hey, is anyone else obsessed with the way that Julian Bashir CONSTANTLY imagines scenarios in which alien men push him up against a wall??????

And the way he always makes bedroom eyes at them when they do, even if (especially if) it’s a fraught situation????

Here’s a few more instances where he didn’t just imagine it (but was definitely into it lol):

Anyway….. I think this is truly the key to understanding his character, lmao, thanks for coming to my TED talk

peppernickel:

If the books Garak and Julian swapped were actual paper books, they totally would’ve written cute notes for each other in the margins.

Julian writes literary criticism in the margins, and question marks around metaphors he doesn’t understand

Garak blacks out entire sections, rips out pages he doesn’t like, and adds comments like “no” and “what” and “why”

peppernickel:

Listen, I love him, but I hate that DS9 never, not ONCE, let Julian Bashir cry or talk about how much life was weighing down on him. They kept piling trauma onto him and then were like “yes you WILL hold it all in and be depressed”. Let him cry!! Give him a hug!! What do you want me to think!! That the only hug he ever got was from Kukalaka!! Is that what you want!!
