Before I get into this, I’m just going to say that this is mostly tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be taken terribly seriously. Altho, if you want to send me anon hate over a post about sexuality and gender in alien fucking, go ahead.

I really feel like sexuality labels start meaning less when we get into being attracted to aliens. Even if someone is only attracted to aliens of the opposite gender, are they straight? Really? Can we even confidently apply human gender to alien species?

Obviously we accept when an alien tells us their gender. But we have to assume they are influenced by their own culture and by their understanding of our culture, both of which are highly subjective. Humans can’t even decide on a set definition of gender within our own species. To assume we can properly understand the gender of another species is arrogance.

The other point here is that, in my opinion, attraction to aliens is inherently queer. It is outside the norm of cishet human sexuality, so, again in my opinion, if someone is attracted to an alien, they are not straight.

Anyway this is all to say that Julian Bashir was never straight to begin with, friends. No matter what Berman&Co thought they were portraying.

Just occurred to me, that scene when the station is trying to kill them-

Garak stands up, realizing that the targeting won’t hit him, as it won’t hit Gul Dukat, because they’re both Cardassians.

Julian says his name and Garak doesn’t even have to look, he puts out a hand and says, ‘easy, Doctor!’.

The fact that he KNOWS, without even having to LOOK, that Doctor Julian Sabutoi Bashir is about to throw his skinny ass into the fray because he thinks Garak is about to get shot– that this is ENTIRELY the kind of thing he would do, that he doesn’t even have to look to MAKE SURE that Julian is trying to scramble out from under/behind cover.

‘Yes, that seems the sort of thing the Doctor would do’. Just. From the damn get-go, he is aware of the kind of person Julian is and that his principles would extend to him risking his life for Garak.

The fact that Garak just rolls with it, shows that he KNOWS it’s a foregone conclusion that if a shot were coming at him, Julian would jump for him.

And god that’s ruining my brain rn.

alright having now finished ds9 (sob) i can now say that every fic that has julian going to cardassia to help rebuild is correct, not just for the garashir of it, but bc i refuse to believe julian subatoi bashir could let suffering on that magnitude go unanswered. dr. “stayed on a low-tech alien planet for actual weeks mixing solutions by hand to attempt to cure a plague.” dr. “stayed up for (at least) four days straight and committed multiple crimes to try and cure odo.” sure, that man is just gonna let it go.

Ranking Julian Bashir’s canon relationships bc ??? why not

1.) Julian/Melora: Tbh controversial opinion, I think she is one of his best-written love interests and fit him the best in terms of actual personality. She was ambitious, found him attractive and interesting, and was prideful but also snarky and clever. She had her own motivations, life, and interactions with people who weren’t him! I think it would have been really cool to see how their relationship could have unfolded given different writing decisions. 8/10

2.) Julian/Leeta: I think they’re basically fine, nothing particularly interesting but nothing too terrible either. I take the opinion that Julian himself seems to take, which is that it’s fun and it’s fine- two people who find each other hot and enjoy hooking up. I never got the feeling that it was particularly “deep,” but they had a good time, and I feel pretty neutral about them. 6/10

3.) Julian/Ezri: My other hot take is that Julian and Ezri really could have worked. They’re in the same field (healthcare), they work together on Nog’s PTSD treatment plan (he backs up her plan but still), she shares interests with him, like a love of reading (she gives him a copy of A Tale of Two Cities which apparently Jadzia had and never gave him even though he’s often expressed an interest in literature. Whatever) and they both have complicated family dynamics in similar ways. They both are children of extremely high-pressure parents, and they both left and were extremely firm about it. Like it COULD have worked- the part that makes it hard to actually enjoy is the Jadzia of it all. I would honestly hate it 100% less if they hadn’t brought back the Jadzia plot in s6 and referenced it in s7. Also, she’s his therapist, which is always a bad look. 5/10

4.) Julian/Sarina: GOD kill it with fire. So bad. So horrible. He sends her back into a catatonic state. Again, the premise is interesting; maybe they could have written it differently. But as far as I can tell, he “falls” for her basically because she is able to help him with his research, she gives him breakfast once, and she makes some good observations about Kira and Odo which. Alright. Apparently, if you want Julian Bashir to be insane about you, all you need to do is be smarter than him and feed him. -1000000/10

section-69:

Pretty sure it’s standard to imagine Julian as a very lax parent and Garak as strict as the state, but I think it’d be the other way round.

Because Julian absolutely reads every possible parenting book he can find, has All The Research, freaks himself out about early childhood diseases and injuries and is altogether so Intense™ about everything he needs to be physically removed from an argument about safety and forcibly calmed down.

Garak, on the other hand? Garak’s child comes home from school after a meeting with the head teacher, eyes to the ground, and gets a quiet lecture about how not to get caught next time.

rayne-the-neutrois-nerd:

Ppl say that after our man bashir is when garak and julian drifted apart and ye kinda?

But those guys are also kinda forgetting in purgatorys shadow and by infernos light, bc garak brought julian along to witness him 1) revealing that tain is his father 2) also witnessing tains death when its taboo to have non-cardassians view such a thing.

But then immediately after they get back, julian is outed as an augment. And i believe THAT (at least narratively) is when they drifted apart and tbfh i think it was julian who pulled away. How can you admit to someone that you’ve trusted against all odds that you were essentially lying to him this entire time.

And I think garak knew something was up beforehand, probably ever since they started hanging out, but respected julian enough to not dig into his past.

I think julian pulled himself away because he was ashamed? Feeling guilty? That he never let garak know the “true” him all these years.

And I keep fucking saying this, but /julian was never as vulnerable with garak as garak was around julian/. Not on the same level anyways. I don’t think julian knew how to be as revealingly vulnerable around him.
