a cute lil piece of pompeian graffiti (CIL 4.8162). it reads “hic fuimus cari duo nos sine fine sodales nomina si [quaeris, Caius et Aulus erant];” in english, “we two men, dear companions without end, were here. if you [ask for] our names, [they are Caius and Aulus]”

sorry im reblogging this again but i just love how cute this is. two men 2000 years ago wrote this on a wall, probably never expecting that we would find it and know about them today. because of the preservation of pompeii, we know this tiny, tiny facet of caius and aulus’s life, this little scrawling on a wall from when they were having a good time together so long ago. and the best part about it is that it says they are “companions without end;” when you think about it, because this graffiti was preserved and we still know about them, that statement is, in its own way, true

History books always seem to leave this out.

Don’t let them tell you that slaves are our only history.

Judo self-defense back in day…

A 1933 video starring May Whitley demonstrating the self defense capabilities of ju jitsu.  Self defense and martial arts became very popular among women in the US, UK, New Zealand and Australia in the 1920s and 1930s.

At that time, at least in the West, there was little distinction made between Judo and Jiu Jitsu. The study of Japanese martial arts was primarily promoted as part of the New Woman’s need for exercise and sport and Japanese martial arts were considered very scientific, a major buzzword at the time.

Most of the time, women’s self defense was presented in an easily-palatable, cute or clever context, and mostly focused on street harassment or acquaintance rape (rather than, say, domestic violence).

Pictures of the UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Palmyra taken following the recapture of the city by Syrian troops backed by Russian forces on March 27, 2016 show the damage made by ISIS during its 10-month occupation. In 2015 the archaeologist, Khaled al-Asaad, who had looked after the ruins for 40 years and refused to reveal the location of archaeological treasures of the city was also murdered by ISIS.

This is tragic, and we shouldn’t forget Khaled al-Asaad, the archaeologist killed by ISIS because he refused to reveal where valuable artefacts had been moved for safekeeping.

Khaled al-Asaad is now part of the history he gave up his life trying to protect, please, never forget about him.

GM’s “Damsels of Design” was one of the first major all-female design teams in US history.

The team, consisting of ten women, was put together in the 1950s, partly to spur innovation, and partly as a PR stunt. Nevertheless, the women created many features we now take for granted: child-proof doors, retractable seat belts, and storage compartments.

Unfortunately, despite their successes, they never quite got their due, as one of the women later related:

“What distressed most of us was that we could never be identified as just designers. We were always ‘la femmes’, or ‘the female designers’, … but as designer[s], we designed the same as the men did.“

Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.

Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.

Well then, let’s bring that name back.

Bayard Rustin, openly gay, human rights activist, proud black man.

(the guy on the left in case you wondered)

Yeah he was literally the guy who was the head of planning the March on Washington.

If you want to learn more about him, there’s a great documentary on him called Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin

You can watch the full documentary here (until March 31st, 2016)
