Don’t forget that women of color and trans women (and especially trans women of color) receive even higher sentences for hurting/killing in self-defense against abusive partners than cis and/or white women.

This makes me think that perhaps it would be much better if these sentences weren’t so arbitrary. Instead of saying that someone can get ‘five to ten years’ for a certain crime, it might be better to say 'if you’re convicted of this crime, it is this amount of years/weeks/days in prison’.

Only my opinion, but I think if it can be proven 'beyond the shadow of a doubt’ that a person killed their partner in self-defense, or in defense of a child, that person should be given and fucking medal and a pat on the back. “Thank you for freeing the world from that fucker.”
