“I need to write this, Doctor, and you’re the only person on this station who will understand… Indulge me, if you will; I need you as a witness. A stitch in time…” - Elim Garak

These lines are from the first chapter of A Stitch In Time, a novel written by Elim Garak’s actor, Andrew J. Robinson. The story is in the form of a letter to Doctor Julian Bashir. It includes Garak’s struggles to help rebuild Cardassia, insight into events on Deep Space 9, and the unveiling of his shrouded past. The book is currently out of print with copies circulating bidding sites, but it has been made into a digital e-book format for purchase here.

What I love about this is how he introduces it with this sort of contrition about how they “needed” to grow apart, but ends up contradicting himself later, by making it clear that his story is deeply connected to his relationship with Julian and that story is still unfinished. (Also the point about “when we’re afraid to learn something new about ourselves” – suggesting there’s potential to continue if they can get over that fear.) That sort of double-speak is so very Garak, and yet the way it journeys from a lie to the truth is so achingly vulnerable, something he rarely lets himself be with anyone – but when does, it’s usually Julian. This statement is why I really do believe that their story (both individually and together) isn’t finished at the end of DS9, and love seeing fanfiction writers continue that relationship and the story in it.

Julian dozes off not long after Ghadar, comforted by her tepid warmth and steady breathing. He dreams of a garden. Of grass-covered dunes. Of a clear sky and hot sun, the air resplendent with orchids. He dreams of a hand in his. Palm sliding over palm. Fingers grazing over fingers. Wrist to wrist. Entwined. Inextricable. No ending. No beginning. He doesn’t know when it began, but he knows where. In his dream he gives in a hundred times, each of them different. He gives in to the hands on his shoulders. He gives in to the rush of adrenaline and danger. He gives in to his better nature. He gives in to a gnawing hunger. He gives in to a deliberate distance he made. In his dream he doesn’t pull away afraid.

In his dream he isn’t afraid.

He arrives at a door and offers his heart like a fresh kill. Take it, he says. Take it. I want no other knife but yours.

seen some art floating about so just wanted to exorcise my garashir ageswap concept from my mind onto this Web Site real quick… my idea is that bashir is twice-divorced and lowkey grody, first from palis, second from a mfm throuple which he was kicked out of after  the other guy knocked the woman up (i just find this maximally hilarious and pathetic). garak actually conceals the spy stuff entirely and plays him like “oh im just a simple faggot a sensitive aesthete exiled from my unforgiving homophobic homeworld because of who i dare to love~~” bashir is like wow its true, other cultures are so barbaric, good thing big strong metrosexual federation daddys here to save u, and teach you how to fuck.” garak is like wow you’re so experienced~~~ nevermind that he came in first in dick sucking class at obsidian order school. they have absolutely outrageous whirlwind lana del rey in the arcade from the ride video sex constantly and get engaged before s2, bashir has a convo w dear old mate miles from the academy and enterprise like “well maybe things are moving quickly but when you know, you know” miles is like um okay so anyway ive been married to the same person the entire time ive known u so maybe dont lecture me abt this considering that u sleep in a racecar bed. also we were thinking wed go lowkey on the presents this time cause buying you a new space cuisinart stand up mixer every time you get your balls licked is getting really expensive. at first garak is in survival mode 100% after that greencard only. BUT THEN. he falls in love ~for real. before they make it down the aisle tho the shit with the wire happens and, contra canon, when the spy stuff comes out bashir is betrayed bewildered and breaks off the engagement. he cant believe he was played for a fool by an agent of the obsidian order etc. garak is heartbroken bc he fell in love for real and also now there’s no way he’s getting that federation passport. :| they get back together after garak saves the day in civil defense and do get married. the other members of the former throuple send a lovely gift. the end.
