“For the Cause” (S04E22, Stardate Unknown) does more than remind us the Maquis exist. It digs at and tortures Sisko as two strong pillars in his life defect and betray him, injuring him at a personal and a professional level. Garak and Ziyal’s story could have been mere filler, but the wrap up was worth it.

The shot of Ben waiting for Kassidy by himself in the cargo bay at the end of For the Cause is the perfect shot to capture how he has to feel after being betrayed by both his love, and a trusted officer. It only felt right to model my poster around it.

Before Garak, I don’t think there was ever another character for whom I thought things like

“I love the way he moves his head!”

Or

“That thing he does with his eyes, you know??”

YEAH!!

There are of course many more remarkable scenes of his showing off Robinson’s physical acting chops but I remember seeing this scene and just being fucking. Enthralled watching him move his head and make expressions. Like it was absolutely riveting

He’s doing so much with so little it’s incredible

Later in the episode -

[Holosuite - Cardassian sauna]

(Ziyal is basking fully clothed on the hot rocks when the door opens.)
ZIYAL: Garak.
GARAK: Hello.
ZIYAL: Doesn’t it feel good? The station can be so chilly sometimes.
GARAK: Yes. It’s quite pleasant.
ZIYAL: Aren’t you going to lie down?
GARAK: Not just yet. I have a question I’d like answered first. Why am I here?
ZIYAL: Excuse me?
GARAK: Why am I here? Am I to believe that you’ve invited the sworn enemy of your father simply to enjoy the heat?
ZIYAL: You really think I asked you here to kill you? Well, it did occur to me. Kira and my father both told me that you used to be an agent of the Obsidian Order. That you had my grandfather tortured and killed, and that you could easily kill me without a second thought.
GARAK: Although I seldom credit the Major or your father with being entirely trustworthy, in this case they’re both telling the truth.
ZIYAL: You know what else is true? I don’t care. I’m half-Bajoran and that means I’m an outcast back home. I can’t go back and neither can you. So we can either share some time together or we can ignore each other. I spent five years in a prisoner of war camp by myself. I don’t need your company. But if you’d like to stay and share the heat with me, maybe tell me something about home that I don’t know, then I would welcome your company. And I get the feeling you would welcome mine. Either way, it’s up to you.
GARAK: Well, it seems I won’t be needing this anymore.
(He puts his weapon down by the door, goes to the rocks and lies down.)
GARAK: So, what shall we talk about first?

I feel like people who read this scene as just Julian being jealous of Ziyal extremely miss the pure hilarity of two boyfriends bickering as one begs, “do NOT Meddle” and the other says, “who, ME?? Never! Cannot Believe you don’t trust me” while absolutely planning to meddle SO HARD

Julian: I know you-I Know, I KNOW you are planning something!!

Garak: *clutches chest* Why, I Never!!

Garak, internal: Do I gotta kill this kid??
