I made this post over a year ago and this is the funniest comment I’ve received on it

#this is why I headcanon that Ferengi have even have even less clearly defined sexes than humans #and keeping females unclothed is one of the few ways to visually tell them apart

There's been a lot of talk over the years about whether Ferengi are a antisemitic stereotyoe. Given that DS9 had more Jewish actors and creative staff, what do you think of that discourse?

Was this something that was kept in mind when reinventing the Ferengi from how they were in TNG?

I can tell you the INTENTION of the Ferengi was to satirize capitalism and the West. Ferengi derives from the Persian “Farangi,” i.e. Franks, people from France. More broadly, it came to mean “Western European.” Hence “Farangistan” = Europe. Farang/i spread to other languages, notably Thai where it now means “foreigner.”

Farang - Wikipedia

So, the Ferengi are intended to be us. Westerners, even more specifically Americans. The original TNG bible compares them to 18th and 19th century Yankee traders. Sexist and greedy, patriarchal and dishonest.

I’m pretty sure this was the intention of their look too, especially the noses. Big noses are common in Asian caricatures of Westerners. Check out the Thai sculpture in the link above. According to my father, for example, the Rhade tribe from the Vietnamese Highlands called Americans “big noses” and when he was their military advisor, he was Captain Big Nose.

And then TNG cast a ton of Jewish actors as early Ferengi, and a lot of people saw them completely differently. (Aside, I’ve heard from some Asian fans that they perceive Ferengi as caricatures of the Cantonese, which speaks to how different cultures see them.)

We were definitely aware of this issue when DS9 came along, and I largely followed the lead of our Jewish-American showrunners on how to handle it. Generally, by digging deep into three different main Ferengi characters and several recurring, I hope we transcended the stereotypes.

We showed Ferengi not as whip-wielding pirate/raiders (not a Jewish trope btw, see Yankee traders), but as a small business owner, a handyman/engineer, and an aspiring Starfleet officer, all struggling with issues of cultural assimilation and grappling with their own culture’s shortcomings when it comes to women and greed.

When writing the Ferengi, I drew from my own (white bread, Catholic, Army brat) background, so for example, I saw the Rules of Acquisition not as some kind of take on the Talmud, but as a satire of Western self-help business books, a kind of “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” meets “The Devil’s Dictionary.” The Ferengi afterlife is based on my vague understanding of Chinese traditions I grew up around in San Francisco, etc.

I’m not sure we fully separated the Ferengi from the baggage they came to us with, but we definitely tried.

ferengi would have so many rain and water based figures of speech and sayings and nicknames. in my opinion.

I think you call a baby Little Drop. because they’re so small like a drop of water.

I think Dry can mean rare. like I think if someone is acting out of character you can be like “in a very dry display she actually listened to me” and I think you could say like “yeah I’ll do it during the drought ” to say that you don’t intend to.

I’m rewatching DS9 and Quark just referred to “the brothers Quark” - which could mean that 1. In Ferengi society, theres no surnames but the older brother’s name counts for both, 2. Quark doesn’t want Rom’s name mentioned anywhere in his business, or 3. Quark’s full name is “Quark Quark”

The first one actually makes a lot of sense

It always bugs me whenever a fictional setting regards personal names as a unique enough identifier. It seams quite illogical that there are enough personal names for every member of the population to have a unique one (except when it is an intentional part of the world building which is not the case), so it is natural to assume there is some mechanism of identifying which John you’re looking for, whether it’s a surname, profession, patronim/matronim, place of birth etc. It is even more likely that Ferengi have one, as they are very big on contracts and help you God if you can’t uniquely name one of the parties. It can be argued that they can use id numbers, fingerprints and such nowadays, but the need for identification almost certainly preceeds centralised numbered ids of any kind, so even if the mechanism is less relevant, it would still be in place at least as legacy.

Secondly, Ferengi seem to have something of a clan system ?? Idk how to put it, but when it transpires that Ishka is earning money Brunt clearly states that it’s Quark’s problem, as he is the head of the family, which obviously isn’t just traditional but has some legal consequences. It is probably due to Ishka, a female, not having any legal agency and therefore needing a male proxy, but Ferengi still seem quite worked up about family ties, even if their family values are kind of different from ours, so it is possible that the “head of the family” thing includes not only female relatives, but also younger males.

So yeah, it might as well be that Quark and Rom used to be Keldar’s Quark and Rom, but now that Keldar is dead Quark is just Quark and Rom and Ishka became Quark’s Rom and Ishka.

Yeah that’s always been my assumption. See also the way that when Nog got arrested in the first episode, Quark held himself responsible (Rom was nowhere to be seen, probably working though) for Nog’s situation. He doesn’t expect Nog to advocate for himself, and he doesn’t expect Rom to advocate for Nog; no, he goes in and does the talking (and also the reprimanding, did you SEE the way he hissed at Nog?? Poor kid’s in hot water). That makes a lot of sense if you assume Quark is the current head of the family

Also lol please don’t leave the whole “Technically this makes Gaila Quark’s Gaila despite him being more successful than Quark” thing in the tags bc that’s a great and hilarious point!! Maybe that’s part of why Gaila is always trying to screw Quark over; he feels like Quark is in his rightful spot as head of the family, so he keeps trying to get Quark out of the picture with rigged shuttles and such.

Star Trek has a few aliens with “better” hearing than humans. It’s an easy trick to make your aliens more alien. But they don’t seem to put a lot of thought into the implication of it.

Well, I have them!

Vulcan must be so quiet. People in public space are talking with a low tone, making a comfortable and non-overwhelming buzz. There is no music blasting in the stores or the restaurants. Their electronic devices are making less noise than Terran’s. It must be unnerving for a human to be on Vulcan. They would be working on a computer and feel the urge to make more noise than usual, not understanding it is because they can barely hear the circuits working. They would walk into a Vulcan house, thinking they are alone, but then they push a door, and suddenly they hear music playing and a Vulcan faintly humming the melody.

On the other hand, it must be tiresome for Vulcan to be around human. Spock must think they are loud just by living. He goes to the rec room, and there is loud laughter, and exciting cry of people playing a game, and people speaking loudly just to be heard over the noise. He brings his lute, giving his ears something more concrete to focus on in this cacophony. During a long shift on the bridge, he hears only the beeping of the console and doesn’t realize someone is talking to him immediately. He is in his quarter, and he hears Jim in the other side of the wall, mumbling to himself and moving around. He sleeps more since he is on a starship, tired to hear that much.

Do Ferengi with their four hemispheres are able to proceed sounds in a way that is less exhausting for their acute hearing? Or does Quark stay by himself in his bar after it’s close to enjoy the peace and quiet? Does Rom go nonverbal after his shift, Nog knowing better than to bother him at that time?

Do Caitan similarities with terran cat extend to their hearing? Does Dr T'Ana able to navigate the medical equipment only by their sound? Is she able to have a full night of sleep, or does she wake up every time someone walked loudly in front of her door?

And what about the Cardassian and their less acute hearing? Cardassia must be loud to human, with the video of propaganda blasting in the street. O'Brien received a lot of complaint about the computer volume when Starfleet first arrive at Deep Space 9. Garak is always making an effort to understand what humans and bajoran are saying to him, and still often ask them to repeat. Sometimes, he leans to whisper something to Julian, and doesn’t realize he is still talking loud enough for the surrounding table to hear him. He always has noise in the background, because nothing is loud enough on this station anymore and his brain is understimulated.

Just… alien characteristic having some influence on the characters and how they interact with their surrounding!
