LEFT Dukat’s [Marc Alaimo] Deep Space Nine costume.

[RIGHT] The station’s most prominent Cardassian civilian, Elim Garak, played by Andrew Robinson. Although viewers knew the character to be a skillful spy, he always described himself as “plain, simple Garak.”

CIVILIAN CARDASSIANS

“When the Deep Space Nine writers started doing stories about Cardassian civilians like Garak, I wanted to put them into something similar to the reptilian rubber suits we’d given the Cardassian military. But then I decided that they shouldn’t just be rubber suits. So I started finding very nice fabrics—like matelassé, which is woven and heavy, and bouclé, which is made with looped yarn—and laminating them onto extremely thin neoprene. Making the outfits out of that material gave them very interesting qualities. When the actor would bend his arms or his legs, the material would bend in a way that didn’t seem natural, that kind of didn’t make sense in a human. And no matter how the actor stood, the material wouldn’t show any wrinkles. It was my way of showing that they were civilians, but they were still Cardassian—very controlled.”

As someone holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion I just wanted to share how extremely weird I consider to be the fact that Garak spent SEVEN SEASONS without going on and on and on about things like pattern making challenges, the tailoring quality of the clothes of random passersby, the sheer boldness of the mix of colours worn by every Ferengi or about how different Earth clothing designs and habits seems from Cardassian ones. Like. I get this is a spy. I get he had no option but to take a civilian job. I GET IT. But as much as I hate fashion nowadays, it’s physically impossible for to me to stop noticing and commenting on these kind of things. All this to say I would absolutely LOVE to see Garak and Bashir discussing fashion over lunch EXCUSE ME

I think maybe he tried with Julian a few times but Julian had absolutely nothing to say. Like, not even bad opinions. Just no interest. So Garak had to find another fashion friend.

Maybe Quark? Or the Bajoran woman he tries to hook Odo up with?
