the thing that has been driving me Bonkers since the show last night is the way the suit jacket is tailored, because despite the obvious intended read that Gerard is going for Sinatra drag* with it, nodding at the history of Las Vegas and, possibly more pertinently, Atlantic City and midcentury casino/gambling culture, this is not a midcentury men’s suit.

Gerard Way standing with their leg up on an amp, dressed in black trousers and a pink-and-gold glittery suit jacket with thin black lapels. The jacket visibly flares out at the waist in part due to vertical creases in the fabric.ALT
Gerard Way singing with a hand over his heart. They are dressed the same as in the other picture, and once again, the flare at the waistline is very visible.ALT

i’m specifically talking about the cut of the suit here, ignoring the gold-and-pink-glitter color scheme. in sinatra’s day, you wouldn’t find a suit jacket for men that flares outward at the waist like this, and it wouldn’t hang with visible up-and-down creases that draw the eye to, and further narrow, your waist.

that’s a silhouette for women’s suits in the 50s, not men’s.

it’s also gerard’s preferred silhouette for Performing Gender; structured-shoulder-to-snatched-waist is the structure we see in the cheer outfit, the nurse outfit, and the jackie kennedy cosplay, and it’s absolutely fascinating to see them use it in what amounts to subversive masculine presentation as opposed to just his dresses, because this means it’s not just about creating a more feminine hourglass shape for their femme looks, it’s an active preference for everything tailored that they put on, and in particular for when they’re Performing Gender.

and I just can’t get over how gorgeous and amazing and queer that that feels, even before we point out the Columbia connection and the glam influence as to the material and colors.

then you combine it with the dustup over kerrang!’s shitty little review of their show at Riot, and it really feels like doubling down on Doing The Gender Stuff sort of in response to that, like “oh, you have a problem with me dressing femininely and taking care of my audience? here, let me give masculinity the same fucking treatment.”

it’s so good and I’m going out of my mind with it.

(*“drag” used in the ambiguous midcentury fashion here, where it applies not just to crossdressing, ex. in bruce springsteen’s “backstreets” w/“endless juke joints and Valentino drag”)

3x20 “Improbable Cause” is Garak’s hottest episode because of this outfit alone and you cannot change my mind. that third pic is So Much like WHY and HOW is he so hot??? anyway I’m so happy I can say these things on tumblr and no one from my real life will ever know lmfao

It gets better when you can see the details properly- this is the version used in ITPM but I presume the fabrics are the same.

thank you very much for this addition! i love the shape of the pants and the red shoes - of course he’d wear red shoes.

I know it’s probably just altered but I like to think that Garak has two versions of this outfit with different necklines.

image

image

I hope his closet is full of variations on the same outfit arranged by how much neck he wants to show on any given day.

It’s also the same with his yellow and purple suit

And his watermelon suit

image

It looks like with the watermelon suit that the collar is adjustable from an undershirt layer. The other ones look like they’re entirely 2 separate suits.

Maybe he needs the different collar lengths too for when his neck ridges are swollen/puffing out.

Or maybe he wants to show off that as well?
