Many residents have fled in nothing but their nightclothes and a number of local centres and religious buildings have opened their doors and are sheltering these now homeless and traumatised people. However donations of clothes, toiletries, food and toys are desperately needed.

Haven’t seen anything on here about it so let me write a quick summary.
Grenfell Tower is a high rise block of flats in Kensington - which is a super rich borough. Grenfell Tower is a social housing complex. In other words, poor people live there.
At 1am this morning, Grenfell Tower caught fire. The fire started on the 2nd floor, and spread via the building’s cladding all the way up to the top, the 24th. The fire was still going long into the morning.
6 people are dead. 50 more are in hospital, 18 critical.
For years, residents in Grenfell Tower had been trying to get their landlord to make sure their homes weren’t a fire hazard. In a series of blog posts, they detail their struggle to get the landlord to acknowledge that the building was a fire hazard. Grenfell Tower had no internal fire alarms, no sprinklers, and only one exit. The landlord insisted this was adequate. The residents asked for an independent surveyor - they were refused. Their counsellor made 19 separate complaints - the landlord tried to have her removed from her post. The building had been refurbished, but none of the residents’ concerns were addressed. Instead, the building was covered in new plastic cladding. The contractors said that the cladding would make the 70s social housing block look more attractive from the neighbouring luxury flats. The new cladding also happened to be extremely cheap. And flammable.
Jeremy Corbyn tried to pass a bill that would force landlords to make their properties safe. The tories voted it down. The fire committee told Boris Johnson, the then-mayor of London, that they were worried about fire risks in housing - he told them to get stuffed. Literally. Theresa May’s aide sat in on a meeting about unsafe housing - nothing was done.
In one of their blog posts, the residents of Grenfell Tower say that they’re afraid that their concerns will be dismissed by their landlord until it’s too late. Until something terrible happens. Only then will their landlord think that maybe, MAYBE, the building was unsafe.
The company that built Grenfell Tower has deleted their webpage on the building.
Marie, a member of the German cat message board Katzen-Forum.de where she is known as Anjuli, has been active in animal welfare in and around Berlin for many years. When she went on holiday to one of the many beautiful Greek islands, she encountered something she could not look past.
Near a small Greek village on the island Andros, there were countless of strays, some of them in pitiful health conditions. She found an older male with ears blackened from skin cancer; three little kittens, abandoned and motherless; a young female, near-death sick and in dire need of medical care.
The source for these abysmal conditions isn’t so much the fact that nobody wants to care for them or feed them - cats are skillful hunters, and the climate on the Greek islands is favourable - it is the fact that none of them have been neutered and that their numbers are rising drastically with each new female that can become pregnant several times in one season.
Marie therefore decided that she needed to do something to help these cats and to - probably not end but - drastically reduce their misery by neutering the females. Some cats also received medical treatment with the help of a vet close-by, but naturally, funds are limited and Marie cannot save them all.
In order to help them - not just immediately but long term - Marie requires financial aid. She is currently not working for a welfare organisation but has taken on this project privately, with her own funds, time an energy when she spends all the vacation days she can take to travel back to Greece and care for these cats.
Marie couldn’t leave the dangerously ill female whom she had named Liza (picture 2 above) in her life-threatening condition. With some medication and care by an acquaintance in Greece, her health was improving quickly. On Marie’s last visit, she took Liza back to Germany. Liza has been negatively tested for FIV, vaccinated and, just yesterday, neutered. As soon as Marie has found someone for her, she’ll be given away to a forever home where she can spend many years happy and healthy.
One of the cats of the pack has already been neutered on Andros and returned to her pack. It is difficult to catch the females at the opportune moment since many of them are already pregnant or in heat, but Marie’s objective is to have as many of them neutered as she can.
Marie knows that she cannot end the desolate conditions many of those cats live under, and she knows that there are many more places just like the island where she encountered these cats, but she had to start somewhere and do something to at least improve life for these beautiful creatures.

This worth spreading around. @petermorwood and I have met cousins of these cats (on the island of Hydra) and they live lives of (mostly benign but not always) neglect. Anyone who’s helping them is doing a terrific thing.
This Friday night/Saturday morning, I was given an ultimatum, after my phone was searched and I was forced to end my long distance relationship with my girlfriend via text shortly after I was forced to ask her if she would support me if I moved in with her. I was told, if I want to be gay, then I would have to leave her house. If I was to stay, I would need to quit my girlfriend and pray the gay away. Too bad for her we don’t pray to the same God in the first place.She also said that maybe, this time when I leave [for school], I should leave for good and stay gone.
My name is Allura. I’m nonbinary. I’m gay. I’m 19 and Black and Muslim and I cannot live like this in this house anymore. It’s killing me. She has already complicated my school situation by taking me from a full tuition scholarship because there were a couple thousand dollars left over on my bill for my second semester, to a more expensive school that has no guaranteed scholarship and will force me to take out thousands of dollars in loans just to pay for my summer, fall, and spring terms.
She has already told me that she is taking most of my paycheck from my new job near my school to go towards bills. I wouldn’t have a problem with that if it meant that I could control my debit card, that she confiscated after finding out that I had applied for it, and then she promptly “lost” it. Every piece of mail I get, she reads it. Every text message I receive, she wants to see. She refuses to teach me how to drive yet constantly shames me for being nervous to get behind the wheel in the past.
I want my own apartment. I want to be in control of my own life, decide where I will go to school, pay my own bills and live my own fucking life. And I’m not ashamed to ask for help. I was homeless before and I would love to avoid that if possible. So please, help me save money to move out, since I won’t keep the majority of my biweekly paycheck. I’m already in a different place than I was making this. I’m still technically homeless, again, sleeping on my older brother’s couch while I get my stuff together. I don’t have anything to my name other than about 25 articles of clothes top, a busted laptop she probably broke trying to push me down the stairs while I was leaving, and to top it all off I’m still applying for colleges. I don’t have anything. I’m trying to build my life back together for the 3rd time, after having lost everything I own the first two times to homelessness too. I’m tired.
I want to be independent but at the moment between just paying my phone bill and surviving, I don’t have any extra money to go towards getting my necessary dorm supplies, so I have no choice but to beg for help. I’ll link my youcaring again, which is going to have to be revamped for the 3rd time because of her fucking my life up again, and I’m going to link an amazon wishlist with some stuff I’d like for school. I’m on mobile so I’ll explain more later but we just got back from south Carolina two hours ago, my utilities are about to be shut off, my hoa wants a thousand dollars, and I’m back in the hospital with mom for the second time in two weeks.
I have $30 dollars in my bank account, and I also can’t Fucking use my oven because it broke before we left. To top it off my dad doesn’t have to pay but $300 and some dollars in alimony for the next two months.

UPDATE: 6/9/2017 so it turns out the people trying to help us with the mortgage can’t help us. they’re coping an attitude because i don’t have a job yet and don’t really care that i’m disabled and it affects the kind of work i can do.
i don’t have my mortgage still because they told us to get the bills caught up and they’d pay the mortgage and now that we’ve started paying bills we have no money for the mortgage.

Once again circumstances out of my hand are managing to do me in. My paycheck fr last week’s work which I needed for my rent money was subjected to my distributor’s new direct deposit rule. And it has not shown up. My bank has no sign of it and my distributor is ignoring my texts and calls. I’m already a day late.
This is kind of a 24-48hr or bust kind of deal.
I’m already late for rent, already wracking up late fees and I’m in danger of being evicted because of this even though I am in constant communication with my landlord for the moment.
So this is a bit dire. If I can raise the money in the next day or two, I’ll be ok. If not, I may be screwed and homeless. Apartments in my afforable range in this city are very hard to find, especially if this puts an eviction on my record.

six fuckhead ass british people in croydon (south london) beat a rojhelatî teen (17yo) unconscious after he told them he was an ‘asylum seeker’. he was hanging out with two friends late friday night when a group of 8 people approached him and demanded to know where he was from. after telling them he was a refugee, they chased him and attacked him – leaving him unconscious with a fractured skull and a blood clot in the brain. he is in a serious but stable condition as of right now. four men and two women in their 20s were arrested on charges of attempted murder and violent disorder late on saturday.

A man who was stabbed in the neck while trying to stop a man from shouting anti-Muslim insults at two young women on a Portland, Oregon, light-rail train said Wednesday that the city should focus on the girls, not him.
An emotional Micah Fletcher said in a six-minute video on his Facebook page that Portland has a “white savior complex” and residents are heaping praise on him, but the real victims are the women. He says they must be traumatized from being targets of hate and from the deaths of two other men who also tried to intervene Friday.
“These people need to be reminded that this is about them, that they are the real victims here,” he said.
Fletcher’s post included a link to a fundraising page for the girls.
“Suffice it to say, that I think it’s immensely, immensely and morally wrong how much money we have gotten as opposed to the money, love, kindness that has been given to that little girl,” he said, speaking of the money raised for him and the slain victims’ families.
