He was likely hallucinating if he wasn’t making it up for fun but the coolest and scariest marine cryptid claim is definitely the giant freezing cold carnivorous flesh blob allegedly encountered by a diver in 1953, who said he watched it eat a shark:
“ Suddenly the water became distinctly colder. While the temperature continued to drop with surprising rapidity, I saw a black mass rising from the darkness of the chasm. It floated upwards very slowly. As at last light reached it I could see that it was of dull brown colour and tremendous size, a flat ragged edged thing about one acre in extent. It pulsated sluggishly and I knew that it was alive despite its lack of visible limbs or eyes. Still pulsating, this frightful vision floated past my level, by which time the coldness had become most intense. The shark now hung completely motionless, paralyzed either by cold or fear. While I watched fascinated, the enormous brown thing reached the shark, contacted him with its upper surface. The shark gave a convulsive shiver and was drawn unresisting into the substance of the monster. “Brown pudding real
You know…if I didn’t know what a whale was, had never seen a drawing or a scale model of an entire whale, didn’t know they were social animals and hunted cooperatively, lived deep in the ocean but also breached the surface to breathe…and saw this?
Nightmares for life.
thinking about a monstrous thing that lurks in doorways and transitways, a thing that comes to you when you are lost or in a hurry, a thing that whispers, do you need directions? i know a shortcut. i can show you the door.
a thing that cannot be contained
blond and blue eyed, once a man, maybe, or once human at least - two legs two arms, and yet it doesn’t walk so much as it glides, or appears in one place and then the other
it gets you to where you’re going
you are not the same at the end of this journey as at the start
it’s HELPFUL is the thing - it only ever helps, never hinders, and when it tells you this it does so with a little smile and inhumanly wide eyes, its head tilting as though it is hurt.
it never hurts anyone, harms anyone - it offers shortcuts, that’s all
if someone learns things on the journey, that’s hardly its fault. if someone changes, evolves, cracks in one way or another… how can it be blamed?
it offers a shortcut - shortcuts can help you make more than one journey at once
it does no harm - it hardly comprehends harm or cruelty, or at least, it doesn’t seem to. it doesn’t understand pleasure either, nor hunger, nor thirst - it understands only want, and satisfaction.
it appears in alleyways and doorways, at the end of long corridors.
it stands at the fore of ships, painfully visible even through thick and swirling fog.
“would you like me to show you?” it asks: its voice is indescribable, changes tones and crackles like an old record. “you seem lost - would you like me to show you the way?”
there’s no reason someone can’t say no. it won’t be offended or hurt - at most it will be confused - but once refused, it can’t be summoned back
but once accepted, you can’t turn back from its shortcut either.
it believes choices are absolute by nature
A peacock but all of the eyes on the feathers are human. The spreading of the tail isn’t a mating display; it’s to help with finding and hunting prey. Similarly to a chameleon, you can tell when it has locked onto a target because all of the dozens of eyes that were previously looking in different directions suddenly snap to look at one thing.
Otherwise it’s a normal peacock and interacts normally with other peacocks, grazing on vegetation and occasionally eating rodents or birds that get too close, and almost never taking human infants
Ok this is NOT a shitty cryptid I think he’s kinda cute
