Sometimes people who visit me are surprised that the chickens aren’t afraid of humans and like

Since their birth, humans have been nothing but a source of food and safety to them

The biggest danger posed by a human is the risk that they (the chicken) might get briefly picked up

Why would they be afraid

They’re pet chickens. I have three pet chickens who lay eggs for us. I don’t run a meat chicken farm.

We did lose one chicken (she broke out of the yard, went for a walk and never came home) but no humans were around at the time.

To answer your question though if I did have meat chickens I don’t think they’d make that connection unless it was the only thing humans showed up for. They are very stupid.

We have to chase ours away from the swing if the 4yo is using it because they will stop and graze directly in her swing path. One got kicked, complained about it, and then returned immediately to the same spot.

Also every chicken should be named Hen Solo.

I learnt something today that I think is just beautiful.

My grandmother was a very sick woman and pretty much housebound for the last of her life.  She derived great pleasure from watching her neighbour’s backyard chickens.  She adored these chickens.  Every time I called, she had new chicken drama to tell me—think Linda Belcher and the raccoons.

It turns out that at some point, their neighbour was no longer able to have chickens because due to a disability he could no longer afford to keep them.  My grandfather, upon learning this, immediately used his spending money to keep the neighbour in both chickens and chicken feed so that my grandmother would have chickens to watch since my grandfather didn’t have time to keep chickens at their home.

He did this for ten years, guys.  TEN YEARS he secretly funded his neighbour’s backyard chickens so that my grandmother would have chickens to watch every day until the day she died.

That’s true love.

fun fact, these are apparently not some breeder’s birds, but some of the feral chickens that wander Key West.  like quite a few oddities, they are an important part of Key West culture…

the fact that someone responded to a hurricane with “shit, gotta get the feral chickens” restores my faith in humanity

The future sucks for the most part.

However, I just spent 5 bucks to release a popcorn treat through the live chat for a whole flock of chickens on the other side of the world in a different hemisphere, and I got to watch them enjoy it live.

And how wonderful is that?

Here is the YouTube channel, the way they’ve set it up is fascinating, take a look!

The future sucks but sometimes you can feed the chickens.

Just found out Brahmas chickens exist. Seeing those dudes really reminds me that they’re related to the t-rex. Look at this dude:

You must be saying, but that is just a regular rooster.

WRONG

At this point you’re probably sweating, maybe shaking and crying saying, surely that child is just short, but again you’d be

WRONG

They are big.

I got tagged in this and I should note: Of all the chicken breeds I’ve met, these are the gentlest and friendliest. Also very somft. All three I’ve gotten to handle have wanted to cuddle, and they’re very warm, like cats.
