Echinocactus polycephalus is in the family Cactaceae. Commonly known as the many headed barrel cactus, it is found throughout the deserts of the Southwest United States and Mexico. Many headed barrel cactus, as it’s common name suggests, produces a cluster of many different stems covered in thick reddish white spines, with some clumps having more than 10 separate stems. The yellow flowers are borne at the top of the stem and bloom during the beginning of the summer.
Lobivia famatinensis is in the family Cactaceae. This species is native to the Famatina mountains in Argentina, where it grows at altitudes of over 9,000 feet. The spines of this cactus extend parallel to the stem compared to other cactus species which have spines that extend outward. Lobivia famatinensis grows very slowly and is prone to overwatering, but can tolerate below freezing temperatures during the winter months.
Echinopsis terscheckii is in the family Cactaceae. Commonly known as Argentine Saguaro, it is native to South America including Argentina and Bolivia. While the plant pictured here looks rather diminutive, in the wild the Argentine Saguaro can grow to over 30 feet tall and produce many branches. This species is closely related to many other Echinopsis species found in this area, and commonly forms hybrid plants in the wild.
Opuntia microdasys is in the cactus family Cactaceae. Commonly known as bunny ears cactus or polka-dot cactus, it is endemic to areas of northern and central Mexico. This species produces pads that are covered in clusters of densely packed glochids, instead of longer spines in other cacti. Glochids are small, barbed, hair-like spines that detach upon contact with the skin. Glochids are produced in numerous species of cacti, and are mostly present in species within the Opuntioideae subfamily. Each cluster on the cactus pad can contain hundreds of microscopic glochids, which can cause immense pain and irritation if not removed quickly.
