I’m feeling Black Pete appreciation in this Chili’s tonight

Someone else said it better and longer than me, but from the first moment he speaks Pete is established as a rough, combative character, resistant to soft “feminine” things, ready to straight up murder the captain, and then he’s…being sweet and complimentary to the most feminine member of the crew, whittling a finger for him, calling him “babe” and “love” and supporting his art even when that art involves the genitals of other (very attractive) men in the crew. They give us this image in episode one and then spend the entire season just shredding it to pieces. The very moment Pete said “Yeah, love?” I was lost.

Lucius and Pete really did just hook up out of nowhere huh?

And, rather than ignore my Dumbo brain and sleep, I theorized and now I’m on Tumblr talking about it.

I fully believe Lucius ‘checked the rations’ with Pete intending it the same way he sketched Fang and had uncomfortable exchanges with Izzy, ie a flirtation/fling without real feelings behind it, but then the Art of Fuckery episode happened and while everyone was worried about him Pete did something more.

Pete whittled him a lame ass finger that barely passes as a thumb.

And yeah, we’ve all seen the episode and know this, but idk if anyone’s ever thought too hard about it. Lucius is used to being the object of desire, of wooing and flirting as he likes, but I think that was the first time anyone had truly gone out of their way to do something nice for him.

And now Lucius is head over heels for our favorite stereotypical pirate because he did what no one else had thought to.

I would like to talk about how much I love Black Pete for a moment. When he was introduced in episode one, I assumed he was going to be the killjoy side character—jealous, a homophobe, maybe he’d keep trying to kill Stede or team up with the bad guys. But he evolves into such a sincere, hilarious guy without losing that initial stubbornness/bravado. His relationship with Lucius was so unexpected and refreshing and real. I just love that little dude. Out here officially endorsing mutinies, carving wooden fingers. He’s a great guy deep down and Stede’s crew gives him the space and patience to start to unlock that.

i believe in autistic pete because his special interest is Blackbeard and he probably does things with his hands like whittling as a way to stim, and he’s not good in social situations. he always says the wrong thing and everyone gets mad at him and he gets confused why everyone is mad because he thought they were all giving their honest opinions and I find that relatable. I don’t care if no one else sees him as autistic but I do. im so used to every autistic character in media being a genius, we rarely ever get dumbass autistic representation, so please let me have this one.
