The Bluebird babies are 10 days old now. They have become vocal, their eyes are open, feathers are starting to emerge. We have gone from “shrimp” stage to “grumpy old gramps” stage. Gayle and Mr. Business continue to be very attentive. Gayle is still spending the night in the box but now that the babies are getting bigger, it is not as comfy for her anymore.

aw i miss sleepovers!! no better bonding time than being 15 and sleeping on a friend's floor & still being awake & having a conversation with them at midnight <3 anyways tell me your top 5 of birds please!! (also cool facts i saw a dolphin in the fjord today it was cool)

Oh gosh top five birds is so hard!! XD There are so many!

Northern Cardinals: they are so bright and cheery and their songs are lovely.

Wood Duck: gorgeous ducks that nest in trees!! Very cool

Vorombe titan: native of Madagascar and the world’s heaviest bird, sadly now extinct. From Wikipedia: “In September 2018, scientists determined that Vorombe titan reached weights of 730 kg (1,600 lb) and stood 3 m (9.8 ft) tall, making it the world’s largest (heaviest) bird, slightly larger than the much older Dromornis stirtoni.” V. titan is a member of a group of extinct birds known as “Elephant Birds”.

Bearded Vulture: they’re huge, they dye their feathers with the red dust of their homelands, and they eat bones. Not just recreationally either, the majority of their diet is bones.

Peregrine Falcon: the fastest bird alive!! They can catch smaller birds in mid-flight. They have readily adapted to living in cities which makes them key in controlling pigeon populations. They are incredibly smart and can be trained to hunt for sport. And they’re so pretty!

Bonus! Pigeons aka Rock Doves: while wild rock doves do exist, their numbers are increased by feral domestic pigeons, descended from pet birds that were released (or escaped) into the wild. They produce a liquid to feed their young called “crop milk”, which I just think is fucking cool. They are also very pretty and never get enough love 💜

the green junglefowl, also known as the javan junglefowl, is a member of the pheasant family found in java and surrounding areas. although they are similar in appearance to the domestic chicken, they are not the same bird, and their genetic diversity has been greatly damaged by hybridization. males and females are drastically different; females lack the iridescent plumage, colorful comb and facial skin, and train of feathers, and instead are a soft brown speckled with green. they live and roost in small flocks of 2-5 birds, and are social birds that suffer when kept as solitary animals.
