the crowned eagle is a large bird of prey native to sub-saharan africa. this bird is considered, though smaller than the martial eagle, to be africa’s strongest bird of prey; they regularly bring down prey much larger and heavier, such as bushbucks and various monkey species. 90% of the diet is mammalian, but on occasion, the species also feeds on large birds and reptiles. like most african raptors, they are largely non-migratory and often stay within one range. adult crowned eagles are mainly brown and black; juveniles have starkly different plumage, with an off-white upperside. as in most raptors, females are notably larger than males.
this unusual common raven is almost pure white as opposed to the typical glossy black the species is known for. that’s because this bird has a condition known as leucism, where a reduced amount of pigmentation is produced in certain portions of the body or through the whole body. this can negatively impact leucistic birds’ lifespans, as melanin is an important component of feather & eye structure.
