But I’m not sure. I am quickly coming to believe that any such title belongs to the Trump campaign. Because I just can’t understand how he is doing as well as he is for as long as he has. Are there actually that many hard core racists and sexists and xenophobes and all around bigots in America that they can explain away the vileness that is the Trump campaign? Have we lost all ability to feel shame for our hateful attitudes? When, exactly, did we decide that the best preparation for being President of the United States was to have absolutely no idea what the President of the United States does … and even less interest in learning anything about it?

I am not so much despondent that Trump is being Trump: he is, after all, Donald Trump. A tottering, spuminating blowhard is what he is, and what he always has been. That is his essence, and he is being true to it.

Instead, I am despondent that so many of my fellow Americans are going for it. How can it be that hatred of Hillary Clinton trumps (!) reason, sanity, decency and indeed self-interest? The man’s not even a Republican for chrissakes. He’s not even vaguely going to do the kinds of things they want him to do. Not even a tiny, tiny bit with his tiny, tiny hands.

I had hoped we were better than that. I am sad to say that the work is incomplete, and our infrastructure of tolerance, decency and hope has, like so much of our infrastructure in recent years, undergone serious decline.

The Trump campaign has surely taught me that.
