The Chemical Worker’s Song. Not far off our current days’ wage slave experience. I’m telling you, you need Union Songs.
Sailors aboard a ship used to hum to warn the captain they were THIS close to a mutiny and didn’t like conditions AT ALL. Because humming was something others could keep doing when you stopped. Anyone comes close you stop, but the hum of the rest keeps on and they can’t prove who, exactly, is doing it.
Just saying.
Sea shanties are a gateway drug to work/labour songs of all kinds, labour songs always end up including union songs, and that’s how you end up extremely hardcore for organised labour.
And if people want more information, this particular song is called “The Chemical Worker’s Song (Process Man)”, written by the Canadian folk group Great Big Sea.
Sea shanties and labour songs are an active tradition! Are you pissed? Sing about it.
The Chemical Worker’s Song is iconic (and in fact a longtime staple of UK LARP filk!) but while Great Big Sea did a cover of it, it was in fact written by Ron Angel in the UK, in 1964. Originally called the ICI Song, it referred to the grim working conditions in an Imperial Chemical Industries factory in north-east England.
The lighting in this video takes it from great to awesome.
I have officially concluded that this woman is a siren. My evidence:
1) Outstanding vocal ability no mere mortal could hope to achieve 2) Haunting lyrics that speak to deep and depressing truths of the world 3) No way to prove she has legs 4) I feel so enchanted listening to her sing that I’d probably let her drown me
Here’s a full version of The Chemical Worker’s Song, for anyone who’s curious
This whole song hits like a sledgehammer, but the stanza that sticks out to me lately is this one:
There’s overtime and bonus opportunities galore The young men like their money and they all come back for more But soon you’re knockin’ on and you look older than you should For every bob made on the job, you pay with flesh and blood
every moment of every day i am thinking about this tiktok
Lumpfish come in a variety of shapes and colors.
[He scoops up the fish, it spits water and he turns it toward the camera]
This one is stumpy and green. Very beautiful, very powerful.
[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]
This is what a normal lumpfish looks like. It is more elongated, but still a vibrant blue color. Very beautiful, very powerful.
[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]
This is one of the stumpiest ones we have. Its hump is very high. It is very stumpy, but yet very beautiful, and very powerful.
[He pans over a lot of fish, all looking up at the camera]
My fish army is ever growing, and soon I will over throw the world. Very beautiful, very powerful.
because of this tiktok, i frequently murmur “very beautiful, very powerful” at myself, and i cannot recommend it enough.
This dude, the one who’s tiktok this video came from, is the greatest. The lumpfish dont flop all over the place like most fish would because theyre USED to being held, so they can be weighed and measured. He also keeps crabs, urchins, shrimp, lobsters, and starfish. He might have more, idk its been a while since I checked his tiktok.
But he’s pretty great and I love this video so much, very beautiful, very powerful.
Reblogging with the explanation because some people in the comments were worried
me holding a gun to a mushroom: tell me the name of god you fungal piece of shit
mushroom: can you feel your heart burning? can you feel the struggle within? the fear within me is beyond anything your soul can make. you cannot kill me in a way that matters
me cocking the gun, tears streaming down my face: I’M NOT FUCKING SCARED OF YOU
Okay, sorry to hijack this post but it just reminded one of the main reasons I’m just SO ANNOYED the series didn’t end with Julian going off to Cardassia to help rebuild it, and it has absolutely nothing to do with my little Garashir shipper heart.
No, it’s because we were cheated of the scene of when Julian is saying goodbye to everyone, and someone mentions how tough it’s going to be since Cardassia’s been “bombed back to the stone age” or something like that, and then Kira says, “Well, I guess the Cardassians are lucky one of the best doctors in Starfleet still has a taste for frontier medicine” wink, haha.
but then Julian just gives this self-deprecating little smile and looks her straight in the eye and says, “It’s not a frontier. It’s their home.” And they just smile knowingly at each other, appreciating how much things have changed and how much they’ve both grown and learned and UGH I’M JUST SO M AD I DIDN’T GET TO SEE NANA AND SID ACT THIS SCENE CAUSE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PERF
