I overheard an argument in the bookstore today.

  • I was looking at Neil Gaiman’s books and on the next shelf over were a bunch of Stephen King novels. A couple was arguing as they made their way towards where I was standing.
  • Girl: What do you mean you don’t like any books?
  • Guy: I’ve just never read anything any good, it’s all been crap.
  • Girl: Are you fucking kidding me, all books are crap? is that what you’re saying?
  • Guy: Yep, all of them. I hate all books ever written.
  • (now they’re standing next to me, in front of the Stephen King books)
  • Girl: Isn’t ‘It’ your favorite movie?
  • Guy: OMG YES, it’s the best movie I’ve...
  • Girl: *hits him in the face with a copy of it* IT WAS A FUCKING BOOK FIRST YOU DOUCHEBAG.
  • Me: *dies laughing*

This is so disgusting. You can LITERALLY buy brown skin with PI tattoos and a grass skirt for $44.95. This is exactly why so many Pacific Islanders have been critical of Disney’s Moana - because this is the result. This is not “just a cartoon”, this is our culture and how we are represented. C’mon…

Hey look lmfao it’s the exact fucking thing I’ve been saying this movie would lead to for months :)

Despite all of the recourse to ‘representation’ politics, we have to fundamentally recognise that this ‘representation’ of/ for Pasifika people comes in the context of global capitalism. What that means is that anything we are, anything we have, will be taken from us, stripped of any meaning which doesn’t directly contribute to producing capital, and then mass produced until it’s no longer profitable to do so.

This is where the politics of capitalist ‘representation’ get us. Literally brown skin suits. This is the culmination of the historical process which saw the mutilated body parts of my exterminated ancestors preserved, stolen and mass-marketed to Europeans in the 19th century. Now for kids.

The House just passed an act giving sexual assault survivors a bill of rights

An act that would reform the way the criminal justice system deals with sexual assault is on its way to President Barack Obama’s desk after a unanimous vote from the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act and would guarantee sexual assault victims’ access to rape kits and also hold forensic labs accountable to an important principle.

Kalpana Chawla, was the first Indian-born woman in space.

March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003

Some background from Wikipedia:

Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962 in Karnal. Her official date of birth was altered to 1 July 1961 to allow her to join school underage. While other children of her age dressed their Barbie dolls, Kalpana liked to draw the pictures of airplanes.

She moved to the United States in 1982 where she obtained a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Determined to become an astronaut even in the face of the Challenger disaster, Chawla went on to earn a second Masters in 1986 and a PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado at Boulder…

Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997, as part of the six-astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. Chawla was the first Indian-born woman and the second Indian person to fly in space, following cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma who flew in 1984 on the Soyuz T-11.

Chawla died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster which occurred on February 1, 2003, when the Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, with the death of all seven crew members, shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107. Just 16 minutes before landing, the space shuttle disintegrated, killing all on board.

She has a number of posthumous honours, including a whole meteorite bearing her name.

Things I Learned While I was Supposed to be doing Other Things

Nebraska has a Navy. No really. And the navy has admirals. I am not even kidding about this. Being made an admiral as apparently Nebraska’s highest honor and the whole thing exists because apparently Nebraska’s governor had nothing better to do that day.

Things that make this even better:

-Nebraska is the only triply landlocked state.

-the award certificate says this: “And I [the Governor of Nebraska] do strictly charge and require all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under your command to be obedient to your orders as Admiral—and you are to observe and follow, from time to time, such directions you shall receive, according to the rules and discipline of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

-Queen Elizabeth II is an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

-Queen Elizabeth II, you guys

-So is Douglas MacArthur

-there is a charitable organization of Admirals called Nebraska Admirals Association

-their mission statement, in addition to goals like “promote education in Nebraska” and “promote the Good Life in Nebraska” also has “seek and save Nebraska’s sea”, “develop and maintain ports throughout the state”, “increase the fleet of flagships in the Nebraska Navy”, and “continue efforts to have U.S. Naval ships named after Nebraska, it’s people, and places”

-this group of Nebraska admirals literally goes around trying to find an ocean to put ships in and also tries to get the US Navy to name shit after Nebraska

-Nebraska’s highest honor, you guys

this is the best thing I’ve learned about Nebraska since Carhenge i swear this state is overcompensating for the fact that it’s literally made of nothing but corn

@linddzz

There’s also a state law that prohibits whaling in Nebraska
