this unusual common raven is almost pure white as opposed to the typical glossy black the species is known for. thatโs because this bird has a condition known as leucism, where a reduced amount of pigmentation is produced in certain portions of the body or through the whole body. this can negatively impact leucistic birdsโ lifespans, as melanin is an important component of feather & eye structure.
i got a request for fancy pigeons, but i don’t know a whole lot about pigeons, so here’s a few that looked fancy to me and one that looks like he just murdered all the jedi
Next up in the ratites are the Casuariidae: the cassowaries. There are 3 living species inhabiting the Austro-Papuan region. Pictured are the Southern (Casuarius casuarius) and Northern cassowary (C. unappendiculatus).
Cassowaries tend to get an unfair reputation of being aggressive dinosaurs that are out for blood. While they are certainly capable of violence if they feel threatened, they, like most other animals, will pay no mind to you as long as you give them their space. Walking slowly through the forests, cassowaries forage for large fruits, making them important seed disperses in their respective habitats. As with other ratites, the male is the primary carer for the young.
Archeological finds in Papua have revealed that some cultures may have domesticated cassowaries prior to the domestication of the chicken.
Since the other poll has ended, let’s do another! Here are some birds that were requested and some that I just think are cool that weren’t included in the first poll. Still no corvids, sorry. Corvidae will be included in a poll with songbirds and the winner of this poll. (yes ‘songbirds’ is an very vague group. I wasn’t expecting to end up getting this technical with the other categories. Maybe I should break it down and do another poll? How many bird themed polls is too many?)
