It’s an interesting facet of Garak’s character that he’s a person who lies for a living, but he also has great respect for unfettered honesty. Which is why he and Odo form such an odd kind of friendship. Like when Garak accidentally finds out that Odo’s been hiding the true extent of his illness from Kira, because Kira already has enough to worry about.
Garak feels so terrible for Odo that he becomes uncharacteristically genuine, and Odo responds by throwing his kindness back in his face…and look how Garak reacts:
He respects Odo more for it. Garak was honest to Odo, and Odo was honest in return. That’s all he wants.
So I just watched Body Parts and I have a question? What happened with Garak? Did Quark ever tell him the deal was off or is he still lurking around trying to kill him? Is Garak going to spend the rest of his life trying to assassinate Quark because no one told him not to?
Now I’m just imagining Quark trying to go about his day-to-day life like the deal never happened every once in a while he sees Garak hiding in a dark corner or under a table or in the closet of his quarters and it makes him girly scream every single time. Then, eventually, Odo starts helping Garak into the strangest, most terrifying places because it’s really entertaining to watch.
The next day Quark goes to Garak and tries to convince him he doesn’t want to be killed.
“Oh, yes,” Garak says, somehow winking without winking. “We wouldn’t want to do anything expected. You would expect that I will not kill you. I, of course, will leave you to live your life fully and completely.” And then he nods significantly.
Quark is terrified.
odo can’t resist a new way to make quark’s life hellish
I can almost feel Kira desperately trying to make solidarity eye contact with Julian and failing because Odo and Quark actually take third and fourth place for messiest gays on the station
They are absolutely ridiculous like it’s too insane
#odo over here like #i know your boyfriend finds it hot when you lie #but i do not #please garak i’m just trying to solve crimes #specifically the crime of who is trying to murder you
Been thinking about those hq ds9 screencaps and this one in particular really caught my eye with the lighting, so I did a quick little repaint as a study-of-sorts
Here’s the screenshot I referenced:
Chief of Security Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
both odo and kira are thinking ‘oh god does she want to have sex’ but their emotional responses are polar opposites
And Miles is there like, “Knowing my luck, they don’t mean sex. This will definitely be more suffering. What’s my therapist’s number again? I should check that.”
! :D! I posted something like this on Discord recently:
Text transcript:
The discussion above on Quark trying to conform to Ferengi norms made me have a realization. Odo and Brunt are really interesting contrasting love interests for Quark, because they’re both law enforcement officers with an OBSESSION with Quark (both in fact have offered to buy Quark’s remains lol). But the key small difference is that Brunt is a Ferengi law enforcement officer and Odo is a Federation/Bajoran one. So what happens is that Brunt tends to punish all of Quark’s better qualities (from the viewer’s POV – Quark’s generosity and kindness) while Odo tends to punish Quark’s worse qualities (from the viewer’s POV – his greed and selfishness). I think as a result it has this interesting vibe of Brunt holding Quark back from being a better person, while Odo helps Quark grow. Love both relationships, and thought this was an interesting contrast.
[…]
Yeah, and both Brunt and Odo together mean that Quark is never really quite happy with who he is. Whatever he does, he’s always disappointing one of them. Poor Quark.
(Of course, from a Ferengi POV, Brunt is the one trying to help Quark be better and Odo is the one holding him back.)
