11-year-old hunter bags rare albino deer
HOWELL, Mich. — It’s rare that an 11-year-old hunter bags a 12-point buck with a crossbow. It’s even more rare when that buck is an albino deer. Gavin Dingman of Oceola Township took down the trophy buck last
I’m not against hunting for food and population control of animals. There are plenty of deer in Michigan. But there is something about this that doesn’t sit right with me. Shouldn’t such a rare animal be treated with respect? Do you know how rare it is for an albino animal to survive as long as this one had? Usually predators will get them young, because they don’t have the camouflage that hides other animals.
What is the purpose of killing it and then mounting it’s body as a trophy? Was it not enough to see it around the area? To take pictures of it and enjoy the idea that such a rare and interesting animal was living so close? Do they really need to stuff it and put it on display, to own it, before they could truly appreciate it?
It makes me angry and sad, because I don’t think this boy and his brother are being taught to respect animals and nature. They are being taught to take whatever they want and to display it as a trophy with no thought of it as a living thing with intrinsic value.
