everything about julian’s present life is the authentic truth built upon one massive lie from his past, while everything about garak’s present life is a lie concocted to conceal the inescapable truth of his past. when julian tells garak “i forgive you, for whatever it is you did” in the wire, it’s more than a simple act of mercy. julian knows on a visceral level what this means to garak—to have a secret so daunting that the act of confessing to a falsehood which merely alludes to the truth you can never speak of, and for that to be enough for forgiveness. he longs for the slightest semblance of catharsis he could potentially gain from quietly hinting and prodding at his own buried truth. garak never needed to tell julian the truth for the two of them to understand what they share; he just needed julian to understand why he couldn’t. and all of it was true, especially the lies.

It really just sinks home one of the defining features of humanity, for me. Even if we absolutely hate a person because our personalities don’t mesh, if we’re in close quarters for a long time, they just become ours.

They’re part of the scenery, and integral to our daily lives.

And in their case, he was basically like Stabby the Roomba. He might stab you in the ankle every now and again, but he was also very cute and endearing so what’s a bit of blood compared to the gift of his very presence?

1st gif: “garak, i don’t understand. why are you helping these people? ghemor is a traitor, an enemy of the order.” entek asks. odo is standing behind entek.

2nd gif: “treason, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.” is garak’s reply, he and kira are holding weapons aimed at entek.

3rd gif: entek tries to threaten garak, “you’re making a serious mistake. up until now, the order was satisfied to let you live in exile, but now…” but he doesn’t get to finish his sentence.

4th & 5th gif: “come on! odo, garak, let’s go!” kira gestures to with her head, while garak starts speaking, they are still aiming their weapons at entek, “and though i’d like to stay and listen to you bluster, i simply don’t have the time.” odo comes to join them. “i’d almost forgotten what a pleasure it was to be with my fellow cardassians.”

6th gif: entek takes out a weapon while odo, kira and garak where fleeing, but garak turns back just in time to shoot entek first, entek vaporizes after getting shot.

7th gif: “a pity. i rather liked him.” garak simply remarks, behind him kira and odo look shocked.

8th gif: garak bypasses kira and odo to the door, they look at garak then at each other, before moving as well. /end id]
