AU: Mary Smith and Anna Smith have been best friends since childhood and became lovers in their teens. Mary and Anna were set by their parents to marry the Woodhull brothers. They would marry and promised to continue their relationship in secret. But when Thomas Woodhull, the elder brother, dies Mary is urged to wed Abe, the younger brother, instead. Anna is forced to marry a Woodhull relative, Selah Strong.
Their relationship is difficult to maintain, but for the love of their son Thomas they strive on. When Anna hears that Ben Tallmadge is recruiting spies for the war effort, Anna creates her own spy ring with the help of Mary and Abigail, a slave in Anna’s employ; a ring that will eventually dissolve British Intelligence in the colonies.
