This is absolutely a footnote from an essay written by Hob Gadling, who read the article in the New York Times when it was first published, remembered it while he was writing the essay, and couldn’t find a copy of it but it fit the essay so well that he decided to say “fuck it” and just put the article in anyways while including this delightful footnote.
