Today’s problematic ship is Crimson Polaris
The Crimson Polaris was a 200 m long wood-chip carrier. On August 11, 2021, while at anchor off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, she was swept away by strong winds and ran aground. Cracks in the hull between cargo compartments eventually lead to the Crimson Polaris breaking in two the following day. Fuel oil leaked into the ocean, but the quantities and the environmental impact are still to be assessed. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated by helicopter.
As of August 30, the bow section of the Crimson Polaris has been towed to shore to unload oil and cargo.
this is what happens when you build ships out of string, sellotape, and cardboard derivatives. luckily they’ve towed it beyond the environment.
Running aground and breaking in two does not seem obviously limited to modern cardboard ships? Do you have any evidence that older shipbuilding practices would have been more survivable in these rather unfortunate circumstances?
@official-kircheis do you wanna tell him or should I?
> @shieldfoss you do it
Alright :3
