Story concept: One of those fantasy or sci fi stories that operates under the assumption that it’s been translated/localized, except it’s specifically translated from a language very, very different to the one it’s being translated too, so there’s an apologetic foreword by the translator asking ppl to keep that in mind and little annotations throughout the text offering references to other in-universe myths/memes/symbolism etc or being like ‘fishsoup here being used to convey the traditional common meal associated with x y and z’ and ‘I know I translated this as ‘friends’ but really
they are fuckingthis is describing a way more profound bond’ EXCEPT -there’s a second translator, and they ALSO give annotations (even on the annotations) and, more importantly, alternative versions of specific crucial passages, and their version of the story is vastly different then the first ones’.
