I don’t understand people who refuse to give money directly to the poor and hungry, but apparently give to charities, when they say “That way, I know where my money is going.” No you don’t. That is the quickest way to lose track of where your money went. You have no clue what that charity did with your money. You have no meaningful way to find out either. If you give directly to the poor and hungry, you know exactly where your money is going - to that person who needs it. You couldn’t be more sure about where your money ended up. It ended up in that hungry person’s pocket.

If you are worried about the person on the street spending the money on cigarettes or something else, you can always go into the store with them and buy them a loaf of bread or a sand which or whatever directly as well.

‘I’m sure glad I’m agreeing to let this person follow me and go to the store with me so I can get $20 from them. Sure, they might murder me or worse, and it’s dehumanizing and humiliating, but now I have a loaf of dry bread that will spoil quickly because of exposure to moisture and temperature fluctuations, will be smashed by whatever other meager possessions I have with me, is pretty bulky for as low calorie and nutrition it is, and I have no way to really store and have to carry along with me because there’s no way I can eat a whole ass loaf of bread.’

Look, giving someone money, there’s always a chance they might misuse it, or use it to not go into withdrawal, which depending on the addiction could kill them. You’re offering a very, very high risk situation to these people who are already targeted by murderers and rapists, for the benefit of like three pieces of bread and a lifetime of the memory of just another extremely humiliating situation where they were broken down even further to prove they’re Worthy of your pocket change.

I’m going to assume you’ve never living on the streets since you really don’t seem to get how things work, and I’m so glad! It’s terrible and no one should ever have to deal with that. But please keep in mind that whatever solution you can think of is unlikely to really be that great.
