penbrydd:

Something I’ve noticed, in some recent conversations, is people with blacklists talking about how much they don’t like things and then saying they haven’t blocked the term because it’s not actually triggering, so they shouldn’t.

Lemme take a moment to correct this line of thinking:

You can blacklist whatever the fuck you want, and ‘should’ has nothing to do with it.

Your blacklist belongs to you, not to anyone else. What you put on it is your business, and no one else will ever know, unless you tell them.

If something is annoying the shit out of you, and it’s not some personally important issue that you feel you need a periodic reminder about, that is a perfect reason to blacklist it.

You don’t want to see it. Other people do. Other people would like to see it in places where you are. You have the power to not see it, without affecting their enjoyment in any way and without just leaving the place and missing the stuff you do want to see.

It’s kind of a no-lose solution, and one that includes being substantially less pointlessly annoyed on a regular basis.
