Inspirational quotes and uplifting messages can do little to soften the shock felt over last night’s events. So many of us woke to a knot in our throats and genuinely shaken by the conclusion of this race. Staring about ourselves wondering how an un-qualified, bought and sold disgrace of a man could have succeeded in winning authority over the direction of this great nation.

A man who spews hate and cynicism, preaching violence towards human beings, has managed to slither his way into a seat of power reserved for those who truly believe this nation can be a united force for good and prosperity regardless of their party affiliations.

Quotes and metaphors, these things will do nothing to cure the devastation potentially awaiting our country and her people…but they can serve as a reminder of what we have overcome. What generations before us have fought for in a more dangerous world. How people dared to raise their voices and refuse to accept that which was unlawful, immoral, and cruel. In worse times we as Americans have stood together, protected one another and our individual rights in hope that one day there will be no further need to hurt for the simple idea of justice and liberty. Now it is time to do so again, even louder.

This morning is one my generation will never forget. This broken feeling which will remain at our sides for the next four years as a reminder of the moment our fellow Americans failed to protect human rights so as not to be inconvenienced.

But I refuse to give up hope. I refuse to sit back and be convinced my vote doesn’t matter and that my feelings and beliefs of how America can be are worthless. I will not let the work of so many before myself go to waste because of this decision by those who can’t see past themselves.

So please, Protect our country. Protect one another. We can and will survive this.
