The article says ‘it doesn’t matter if they won or lost’ but I beg to differ. It matters a great deal that she won. The commentators loved it. The judges loved it. The audience loved it. They loved her. They loved her being modern and unapologetically black. Traditional sports like this where there’s an artistic/aesthetic component, where the judges have some discretion, you can get absolutely screwed on your score if they think you’re not being ‘true’ to traditions or ‘the sport’ or the like.
She got a 9.925. Her first round out with this, no warning to the judges how special it is going to be, and she got a 9.925. A black girl with black music and black dance moves got the unquestionable approval from the officials of a sport that is traditionally hella white in this country. And yes, she absolutely fucking killed the tumbling passes too, but they could’ve dinged her a lot more for not being ‘elegant’ or some bullshit. They don’t even have to admit it – her first landing wasn’t perfect, and they could have knocked her as much as possible for that and pretended that was why. But they didn’t.
And like, that should be not astounding. The fact that she carried herself with beauty and dignity and grace and power and nailed the hell out of her technical elements should always mean a score like that. But it doesn’t because, as you probably already know, racism. And the fact that today there was no racist bullshit in college sports, well. That occasion is still rare enough it’s worth talking about.
